In this episode of Moths to the Flame, I sit down with Tim Waggoner, an accomplished author of horror and fantasy novels, as well as media tie-ins. Waggoner has published close to fifty (yes, fifty!!!!) novels and seven collections of short stories since his first novel came out in 2001. He has won the Bram Stoker Award and been a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award, the Scribe Award, and the Splatterpunk Award. In addition to writing, Waggoner is also a full-time tenured professor who teaches creative writing and composition at Sinclair College. In this episode, we discuss Waggoner's journey into the horror genre and how he got started with writing. Waggoner shares some of the authors and books that have influenced his writing style, as well as his experience with different genres and how he navigates between them. We also talk about Waggoner's experience writing tie-in fiction for popular franchises like Supernatural, Alien, Grimm, Doctor Who, and my personal favorite...STARGATE! We discuss his book "Writing in the Dark" and what inspired him to write a comprehensive guide to writing horror fiction.

Waggoner provides guidance for both new and veteran writers, sharing common pitfalls or mistakes he sees writers make in the horror genre and how they can be avoided. Waggoner shares tips and techniques for creating atmospheric and immersive settings in horror fiction, as showcased in his works. We also talk about the role of fear and the human psyche in his storytelling, and how he taps into those emotions to create impactful narratives. Finally, we discuss Waggoner's new book, "Let Me Tell Ya a Story," and what inspired him to write it. We also discuss his upcoming projects and future plans.
