One of the coolest aspects of being a musician is meeting people and building friendships that probably would have never existed without the common connection. Episodes like this one are special to me in that way: I have a tangible representation of a new relationship that has formed.

Citizens Unaware is a Cleveland-based rock group, combining elements of art rock, prog, indie pop, and...I mean, there's just so much in this "cosmic gumbo" of sounds. All too often I'll listen down to listen to a handful of local bands and have that familiar experience of "these guys sound just like Green Day... these guys sound just like The Strokes... these guys sound just like Nirvana...." Of course we all have our influences, but those influences need to inspire new sounds and creative ideas, not to commit mitosis to form yet another crappy clone band.

Ultimately this conversation was a celebration of Citizens Unaware's latest album "Everyone Is Splendid Sometimes". In that celebration we explore our shared musical interests as well as the differences that keep things interesting. Jayk and Justin make music in a manner that is pretty different from my own, which opens up a new world of creativity and musical opportunities. Of course I was honored to be in the presence of the writers of the hit single "It Wednesday", a song so catchy most people probably don't listen to the lyrics....but they SHOULD, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends...... (anyone get the reference?)

You can check out "Everyone is Splendid Sometimes" on all major streaming platforms. After this conversation the album SHOULD be on Bandcamp, which is, of course, the best online platform for directly supporting artists.
