Suzanne Roberts from the Macular Society Counselling service joins Colin Daniels for this episode of the My Macular and Me podcast. We are also joined by Lesley who was diagnosed with macular disease and began using our counselling service when she felt she was at her lowest. This episode looks at the emotional impact of a diagnosis of macular disease and the support that is available from the Society.
A diagnosis of macular disease can be extremely upsetting. Finding out that you may lose much of your central vision, and adapting to changes in your vision, can be very difficult to comprehend. After diagnosis many people struggle to cope with their emotions and can feel shocked, afraid or isolated. It can help to speak to a professional counsellor, who is trained to listen to talk through your feelings and help you find ways of dealing with them.
We have a team of dedicated counsellors who have extensive experience either personally or professionally within the field of sight loss. This is a service for anyone who has been diagnosed with macular disease. We also offer the same service to that person's family members. You can refer yourself or somebody else via our online form or you can contact us via our helpline on 0300 3030 111.
The Macular Society has been supporting people with macular conditions for over 30 years. The right information and support can help people overcome their worries and retain their independence. We provide free information and support to those with macular disease, along with their family and friends. If you or a family member need advice or support, please make sure to reach out. No one has to face macular disease alone. Please call us on 0300 3030 111.
