I 1920-årene fikk Norge to nobelprisvinnere i litteratur. Knut Hamsun fikk prisen, mye takket være Markens grøde (1917) i 1920, og åtte år senere ble den Sigrid Undset til del for hennes middelalderskildringer i romantrilogien Kristin Lavransdatter og i de to romanene om Olav Audunssøn. Ettertiden har gitt de to forfatterne et vidt forskjellig ettermæle, men er forfatterskapene så ulike som de ved første øyekast kan synes? Hva skiller Hamsun og Undset, og hva binder dem sammen, i det de skrev i 1920-årene?

Forfatter og Hamsun-biograf Ingar Sletten Kolloen møter forfatter Vigdis Hjorth til en samtale ledet av Ane Farsethås, kritiker og kulturredaktør i Morgenbladet.
