Den folkespråklege salmediktinga har alltid hatt ein stor plass i kyrkja. Med reformasjonen blei salmesongen særleg viktig for å sameine den teologiske læra med livserfaringane til folket, og utover 1500- og 1600-talet fekk salmediktinga eit stort oppsving. Ein av dei mest populære salmeskrivarane var ei kvinne: Dorothe Engelbretsdatter. Den første boka hennar, Siælens Sang-Offer, blei gitt ut i Christiania i 1678 og kom i heile sju utgåver berre i hennar levetid.
Kva plass har salmane hatt i den kyrkjelege offentlegheita og i koplinga mellom kyrkja og allmugen? Og korleis kunne det ha seg at ein kvinneleg forfattar fekk så stor gjennomslagskraft i ei tid der kvinner elles hadde liten tilgang til det offentlege rommet?
