I think this episode is particularly interesting not only for those who are interested in Japan, but also for minimalists, and mountain climbers. What do you use when you sweat or when your hands get wet? Some people may allow their hands to dry naturally, but I think most people use a towel. In my case, I often use a tenugui towel. A tenugui towel is very useful, so I would like to introduce it to you all.

Tenugui is made of plain-woven cotton cloth, and the edges are unhemmed. Towels have their edges sewn to prevent them from fraying, but this makes the fabric overlap and therefore difficult to dry. On the other hand, tenugui is very thin, so it dries quickly and is hygienic.

The reason why I recommend it to minimalists and mountain-climbers is its lightness, thinness, and its many uses. Three tenugui towels are about the same weight and thickness as one thin towel. Also, it can be used in many ways, not just for wiping hands. For example, you can use it as a wrapping cloth, an eco-friendly bag, or even as a bandage for an injury. I always take it with me when I go mountain climbing. It is good for wiping sweat and I want to reduce my luggage as much as possible when climbing.

Tenugui was considered outdated for a while, but recently people started to become interested in them again. These days you can find many cute designs in addition to classic Japanese patterns. If you are interested, please check them out.
