日本には、一年の中の月を数える特別な言い方があります。10月をどう言うか、知っていますか？神無月です。由来は、漢字の通り、神様がいない月、です。どうしてこんなふうにいうかというと…日本ではもともと、神様は世の中にたくさんいると考えられてきたんです。その神様たちが、毎年10月になると会議のために出雲大社という神社に集まります。だから、日本中から神様がいなくなる月ということで、神無し月、神無月というんです。ちなみに、出雲大社がある島根県では、10月を神在月、と呼んでいたそうですよ。
さて、今日はみなさんに1冊の本を紹介します。「すべての神様の十月」という本です。古くから日本に伝えられてきた、さまざまな神様たちの日常を描いた本です。いくつかの短い物語で構成されていて、ユニークな神様たちが人間と交流する様子が書かれています。
ちなみに、冒頭に話した出雲大社での会議では、それぞれの神様がその一年にあったことを報告しているそうです。報告の内容は、人の運命や縁などについて。今回の話も、まるで神様同士が会議で人間たちの生活について報告しあっているように感じました。読み終わったあとにタイトルについて考えてみると、おもしろいですよ。
