In episode 007 of the No Harm health and safety podcast, host Marvin Polis shadows some of the crews working at a recent turnaround at the Shell Scotford complex. Shell Scotford consists of an upgrader, oil refinery, chemicals plants and a carbon capture and storage facility. It’s one of North America’s most efficient, modern and integrated hydrocarbon processing sites, converting oilsands-derived bitumen into products like gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and feedstock for the plastics industry. Turnarounds are huge maintenance events where some portions of the plant are shut down and a large number of employees and contractors descend upon the plant to replace and repair various infrastructure. Turnarounds are expensive, complex and require keen attention to safety. The Adopt a Crew initiative was conceived prior to one of their recent turnarounds as Shell acknowledged that building personal relationships is essential to a culture of caring and keeping everybody safe on site during this huge maintenance event. The turnaround was kicked off with a gathering where Shell employees were paired up with specific foremen. This paring remained in place for the entire duration of the turnaround, where relationships were established to influence safety performance. No Harm is the health and safety podcast for HSE professionals. We explore issues and initiatives to help you sharpen your professional skills and better understand emerging issues.
