In our first episode of 2021, we discuss moderation. Is moderation always a good thing, or is there ever a time for being "extreme". The discussion dabbles into topics of Idolatry, pursuing pleasure, trying to always be in control of our lives and the importance of responding to our kids in moderate and measured ways.

NOTES:

  • This Weeks Whiskey: Elijah Craig single barrel, small batch Kentucky Bourbon
  • Moderation can be an excuse to not do the necessary hard things in life
  • Moderation is good because we as humans have a propensity for Idolatry and being extreme in our passions and pursuits.
  • God created life to be pleasurable... but pursuing pleasure too much leads to being enslaved by it and it becomes an idol and an extreme thing in our life
  • As Americans, we like to feel like we are in control of our lives... but in realty, we have very little control over our lives and when people realize that, anxiety and stress tend to be the outcome.
  • "There is freedom in discipline" - Tim Keller.
  • As dad's, we need to have a measured and moderate response towards our kids.
  • As parents, our focus of discipline should be correcting the heart, which leads to behavior change... not just focusing on our kids when their behavior is annoying or inconvenient to us.
  • Is there ever a time to NOT be moderate?
    • If we define "moderate" as measured, thoughtful, considerate and mindful... our obedience and following God shouldn't lead us to be legalistic modern Pharisees.
  • There is a distinction between being moderate and being all-in on our execution of commitments & convictions (like obedience to God, military training, loyalty and loving our spouses and families, etc).
