ACCEPT YOUR UPGRADE Consequences of Performance-Based Faith: • Increases alienation • Breeds hypocrisy • Confuses new believers • Disillusions outsiders • Devalues the Sacrifice of Christ You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? . . . Galatians 3:1 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? Galatians 3:2 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? Galatians 3:3 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” Galatians 3:10 Why, then, was the law given at all? Galatians 3:19 [T]he law was our guardian until Christ came. . . . Galatians 3:24 Paidagōgós: a legally appointed servant authorized to train, discipline, chastise, instruct, protect and supervise a child twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week [P]edagogues are guards . . . they are keepers . . . they are a fortified wall . . . [They are a] protective wall . . . and a prison . . . . Libanius [T]he law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. Galatians 3:24-25 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17-18 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. . . . Galatians 3:13-14
