The Macintosh Operating System Throughout The Years

  • System Software (1984 - 1991)
    • Very confusing era for version numbers
      • Example: in 1987 Apple released System Software 2.0 which ran system version 4.0(don't even get started with Finder version numbers)
    • Jumped from System Software 2.0 to 5.0 in 1987 (running system version 4.2)
    • Version numbers were unified starting with System Software 6 in 1988
  • System (1991 - 1997)
    • Simplified name starting with version 7
  • Mac OS (1997 - 2001)
    • Version 7.6
    • Changed so the name would be trademarkable
      • Part of Apple's process for cutting off clones
  • Mac OS X (2001 - 2012)
    • Changed version numbering
      • 10.2 - 10.3 would be equivalent to 6.0 - 7.0 from the classic Mac
    • Was referred to by version number until 10.2 which was known as 'Jaguar'
      • Each version was referred to by a different cat rather than a number
  • OS X (briefly in 2007, 2012 - 2016)
    • Name originally changed when iPhone was introduced
      • Was meant to unify the Mac and iPhone under a single OS
      • "iPhone runs OS X" - Steve Jobs
    • Changed formally in 2012, but only referred to the OS running on Macs
    • Carried over the cat naming scheme from Mac OS X, but switched to locations in California starting in 2013
  • macOS (2016 - present)
    • Changed to be brought in line with Apple's other platforms
      • iOS, tvOS, watchOS
    • Carries over the California location naming scheme
