Acts, Chapter 18 - Paul in Corinth

18 After these events Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, 3 and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them, and they worked together, for they were tent-makers by trade. 4 And Paul was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

- After these events

- What events?

o Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus on Mars Hill

o He had explained the unknown God to the Greeks seeking knowledge

o He explained that God made everything; He does not live in temples made by men hands; He does not need anything; He Himself gives all people breath and life; He made every nation from one man; and He determines their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation. He sent His son to die on the cross to pay for man’s sin yet He was raised again on the 3rd day. He is the risen Lord and Savior!

- He found a Jew named Aquila

o Paul left Athens (Athens means “confused”)

o And went to Corinth (Corinth means “satiated” or “satisfied”

o Aquila means “Eagle” or “graced by Yahweh” or “God is gracious”

o A native of Pontus (Pontus means “Sea”)

- Having come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (Priscilla means “ancient”)

- Because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome

o Claudius means “limp enclosure” or “disabled”; “lame” or “crippled”

o Jews “belonging to the Jewish nation”

o Rome means “strength”

- And Paul was reasoning in the in the synagogue every Sabbath

o Paul means “small or little” and Sabbath means “rest”

- Here is the story unfolding here:

o Paul had just introduces the risen Lord and Savior to those who were confused in Athens; those who were merely searching for knowledge but not necessarily truth

o Now he comes to Corinth where people are fat and happy “Satiated”

o He meets Acquila and Pricilla (An eagle showing God’s grace; as vast at the sea; and from ancient times past)

o God would come to those with a limp enclosure (weak flesh), to His people to give them strength and rest

- God uses Paul who was a tent-maker (emphasizing the temp dwelling of this life)

o Tents are meant be temporary dwelling places…

5 But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. 6 But when they resisted and blasphemed, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood is on your own heads! I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”

o Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia

o Silas means “asked-for”; “highway-maker”

o Timothy means “honoring God”; “God values”

o Macedonia means “Land of the Tall”

o Paul means “small”; “little” or “humble”
