Manage episode 307278717 series 2998973
What's up Park Rats?!
The ecology of National Parks and Forests face many threats from all sorts of outside interactions. In todays episode we talk about harmful invasive species in these places we know and love.
The Florida everglades are known for a large number of invasive species. We talk about a few that are particularly terrifying. The Burmese python is a large snake that was introduced into the wild through the pet trade. These massive snakes snatch up anything from small creatures to alligators.
Along with large snakes, wild boars are also a huge issue in Florida. These feral pigs have found homes all over the south east US after being introduced as livestock from early European settlers.
We also talk about the Coqui frog which has taken over the forests of Hawaii. For its small size the frog can let out a loud croak which is an issue among locals.
Gypsy Moths are another invasive species that are taking over the Midwest and northern US states. If you see one of these guys do us a favor and give it a good smash.
Invasive species are a huge issue globally and recently Pablo Escobar's hippos have come into the news due to their new protection status. We talk about how one of his hippos would match up against the Kentucky coke bear so place your bets on Instagram!
