Today we are talking about preeclampsia. Now, years ago this condition was also called toxemia. So perhaps your mother, grandmother, or aunt may refer to preeclampsia as toxemia.

There is no toxin that creates preeclampsia, so that name was rather misleading to many pregnant women. preeclampsia is a complex issue in the body that takes place at a microscopic level and it creates a clinical scenario for you that can be dangerous for you and your baby.

There are three elements that make up the diagnosis of preeclampsia.

1. Elevated blood pressure

2. Swelling throughout your body

3. Protein being released from your urine

When your urine is checked in your OB’s office often times they are identifying if the protein is there or it is not there. If protein is found in your urine then you are a candidate for a potential diagnosis for preeclampsia.

When the diagnosis of preeclampsia is made your doctor will stratify if your preeclampsia is mild or severe. Then a decision will be made on how your preeclampsia will be managed.

There are three options for the management of preeclampsia depending on the severity. You can be managed as an Outpatient (at home), 9inpatient (in the hospital), or by delivery (your baby needs to be delivered).

The last option often raises many questions. “Why should my baby be delivered and how will my baby be delivered” are the two most common questions.

Delivering the baby whether it is a vaginal delivery via induction of labor or c-section will reverse the course of the preeclampsia.
