Dr. Boyd, from Pearently, discusses a few key thoughts to consider when planning your pregnancy.

Women often ask if there is a best time of year to get pregnant? Perhaps you are wondering, “When is the best time to deliver my baby?”.

Honestly, there is no “Best Time” from a health standpoint for your baby. Any month or time of year is a great time to get pregnant. However, there are a few things I would like to discuss that may help you choose the best time for YOU to get pregnant!

ONE: Where Do You Live?

Consider the weather in your particular part of the country (If you are in the U.S.) or the world. If you live in the U.S., particularly in the midwest, the northwest or the northeast where you may have snow affect you at the time of delivery. Maybe it would not be best for you to get pregnant at the time when your due date would land within the winter months (December, January, and February).

Pregnancy is 40 weeks long, so if you are planning your pregnancy try to plan your due date at a good time of the year according to the weather in your part of the country/world.

TWO: Are You Stressed?

Stress is a huge issue for many women. If we could pour pixie dust over you and your stress would vanish we would do that for you in a heartbeat! But, we don’t. It is easier said than done trying to eliminate stress in your day and your life.

It is best to get pregnant with as little stress as possible. So start attempting to make changes in your life in order to reduce your stress before getting pregnant. You can exercise, eat healthier, care for your relationships (so they do not cause unneeded stress), reduce some expenses to help relieve any financial pressures… all of those can help decrease stress and improve the health of your pregnancy.

THREE: Are You At The Proper Weight?

Maintaining a healthy weight (BMI) when getting pregnant is important for the health of your baby and decrease the stress on your body when getting pregnant. Now, what is a healthy weight when getting pregnant?

We recommend a BMI (body mass index) less than 35 when getting pregnant. If you have a BMI that is 25 - 34 that places you in the normal weight group or the slightly obese group. Even though we prefer you to not be in the obese group. With a BMI of less than 35 MOST women don’t have problems getting pregnant or problems during pregnancy.

FOUR: How Is Your Diet?

Many Americans do not have a healthy diet. It is very difficult to turn over a new leaf tomorrow in order to get pregnant this week. One very helpful way to get started with a healthier diet is to decrease your sugar intake to less than 50 grams per day of added sugar will help decrease your BMI to less than 35.

FIVE: Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal Vitamins are very important before conception. You can read a full post I have written about prenatal vitamins ( Click Here). Along with your prenatal vitamin, it is important to take 1mg of Folic Acid to make sure the baby has a decreased risk of neural tube defect.

In conclusion, there is no such thing as the perfect pregnancy or the perfect time to get pregnant. However, these are some guidelines for you to follow that will help you in decreases your overall stress and therefore being happier when you receive that news that you are pregnant!
