Dr. Boyd will talk about the 4 reasons that you should or should not go to the hospital. These are in a specific order so that you know if you are truly ready to go to the hospital.

  1. Labor
  2. Rupture of Membranes
  3. Spotting Vs Bleeding
  4. Decreased Fetal Movement

Labor is the first sign that you need to consider when you are thinking about going into the hospital. For first time moms it can be tricky to understand when you are actually in labor. You have never felt active (FULL ON) labor before so how in the world do you know if it is actually happening.

Dr. Boyd uses many analogies to help you understand the pain of labor. Labor pain is a key indicator. He likes to ask women in his practice. Have you ever been hit in the head with a wood 2x4. 99.9% of women, say, “Well, of course not”. He then proceeds to say… “If you did get hit in the head with a 2x4 would you know…” And I am sure most women would say, “Well, of course.”

This is what labor pain is like. You are CERTAIN that you are in labor because you have never experienced this level of pain before.

Another key element is to consider the timing and of your contractions (described by Dr. Boyd in the video).

The second reason you may be in labor, or you may not be… is the rupture of your membranes.

Many women end up at the hospital and they have merely lost urine rather than their membranes rupturing.

So it is important to understand the difference between your membranes being ruptured and simply losing urine do to a weak urethra late in pregnancy.

The third reason you may or may not end up at the hospital is bleeding or spotting. Something that happens late in your pregnancy is spotting. This is due to the cervix thinning out and preparing for the delivery of your baby.

If you are bleeding heavily on the other hand you are definitely going to want to call your healthcare provider or go to your local hospital.

The last thing that may take you into the hospital is decreased fetal movement. Every woman that is pregnant feels their baby move throughout their pregnancy. However as you reach the end of your pregnancy your baby begins to run out of room. So the movement is going to decrease relatively to your earlier gestation.
