Entertaining Angels? Exploring Hospitality and the Sin of Sodom with Josh Liem Genesis 18-19 NIV This Sunday, we explore one of scripture’s most haunting and revealing stories—Genesis 18–19. From Abraham’s lavish hospitality to the destruction of Sodom, this tale confronts us with questions of justice, compromise, and how to live as people of love in a world of brokenness. Come reflect on what it means to entertain angels, resist the myth of consumption, and live toward the kingdom Jesus revealed For reflection & discussion: What stood out to you in this week’s sermon or the Genesis 18–19 story? How does Abraham’s hospitality challenge our approach to strangers and guests today? Why do you think Lot compromised so much? Have you ever felt caught in a similar situation? What continuities and discontinuities do you see with our city and Sodom? What does it look like to be a faithful resident or alien of this city in light of that? What is one act of radical hospitality you could try this week?…
A Way Forward with Rev. Laura Wiens Genesis 12:1-5 Ever feel like life keeps hitting dead ends? This Sunday, we’ll explore how God reroutes our lives with purpose and hope through the story of Abram and Sarai.

Into the Waters: Easter and Resurrection Hope with Josh Liem Romans 8:18-39 This Easter Sunday is extra special as we celebrate Christ's resurrection AND witness the baptisms of Sean and Phil! Join us as we explore what baptism meant for early Christians who risked everything to follow Jesus. Why pledge allegiance to Christ? Discover the costly, unbreakable hope of the resurrection that empowers us to live differently, even through suffering. Come witness new life! For reflection & discussion: 1. The sermon emphasizes pledging "allegiance" over just "believing." What difference does that distinction make in how you understand your faith? 2. What are some of the competing "Caesars" or powers demanding our allegiance today? 3. The sermon contrasts God's power (love, forgiveness) with worldly power (domination, coercion). Where do you see these different kinds of power at play in your own life or society? 4. What does "taking up your cross daily" mean to you in the context of following Jesus' way of love and non-violence, even when facing opposition? 5. Reflecting on your own journey, what is one step the Spirit might be inviting you toward today – remembering your baptismal vows, considering baptism, or living out your allegiance more fully in a specific area?…

Parades, Promises and Possibilities With Guest Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ross LockhartLuke 19:28-40This Sunday around the world Christians gather to worship God and recall the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. This parade is memorable, but it also marks the beginning of an emotional roller coaster for all who know, love and seek to follow Jesus. What might we learn from joining the crowds and shouting Hosanna? What might we discover as we listen carefully to Jesus’ prophetic words? -- Reflection questions for small groups: Tell a story about the most memorable parade you’ve attended in your life. What made it special? Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey rather than a war horse. What does Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem tell you about his character and what we might be called to do as disciples? Why do you think the Pharisees try to get Jesus to quiet the crowds? What were they afraid of? Reflect on Jesus’ words that if his disciples are quiet, even the stones will cry out. What does it mean for Creation to cry out in these contemporary times when we wrestle with the impact of climate change? Where do you see yourself in today’s bible reading – do you identify with the crowds cheering Jesus on; or the Pharisees worried about things getting out of control; perhaps you see yourself aligned with Jesus moving through a temporary moment of celebration but sensing a time of trial ahead, or perhaps you see yourself more in the character of the donkey, lifting Jesus above the crowds for others to see and cheer?…

Babel Babble and Bearing God’s Name with Josh Liem Genesis 11:1-9 This week, we enter the story of the Tower of Babel with fresh eyes—exploring how language can be used to build empire or spread blessing. We'll reflect on God's surprising mercy in scattering humanity, trace the redemptive thread from Babel to Pentecost to Revelation, and consider how Jesus teaches us to bear God's name with humility, not pride. With stories of assimilation, ancient myths, and our own multicultural city in view, we’ll imagine together what it means to resist assimilation and celebrate difference in the Spirit of Christ. ---- For reflection & discussion: When have you felt pressure to assimilate? What languages or cultural practices have shaped your identity? Read Genesis 11:1–9 again slowly. How does this story challenge common ideas about unity and civilization? When have you seen or experienced tension in church around cultural or generational differences? Why is it easier to minimize differences rather than value them? What is one step we can take and be accountable for in moving towards unity in love across differences?…

A Life of Sacrifice with Guest Dave Mohr Romans 12:1-2 What does it look like to live a sacrificial kind of life? Really? According to God’s word, true sacrifice involves a lot more than the things we do on the outside, like our words or even our actions. It’s bigger than that, but more accurately it’s deeper than that. This weekend we will be looking at the roots of where a transformed life both comes from, and where it leads. Before becoming the executive minister for the BCBA, Dave served as the pastor of an NAB church in Calgary, Alberta. Having been married since 1991, he and his wife, Kim, have three adult children. Though he has been geographically displaced fan for some time, Dave is a life-long Edmonton Oilers fan. For reflection & discussion: Paul starts verse 1 by saying, “In view of God’s mercy...” What does he mean by that phrase? Can you think of some practical applications of God’s mercy to you? If the ancient world thought of sacrifice as religious behaviour, how did Paul approach the idea of sacrifice? What does a life of sacrifice begin with (or, flow out of)? What are some ways followers of Jesus might show mercy? How is God honoured when we show mercy to others? If being a living sacrifice is an everyday act of worship, how should I approach my day? Is that challenging or easy? What are some of the dangers of defining ourselves by anything other than how Jesus defines us? If transformation always starts on the inside, in your experience how does it show up on the outside? What kind of posture is God calling us to? What steps do I need to take to have that posture this week?…

Water, Blood, and Fire: The Covenant Journey from Noah to Christ with Josh Liem Genesis 9 "What does an ancient covenant after the flood have to do with Jesus—and with us today? This week, we explore Genesis 9 and how its themes of justice, peace, and covenant find their ultimate fulfillment in Christ. We’ll also examine how Scripture has been misused to justify injustice, and how Jesus offers a radically different way to live in light of God’s promises. Join us as we trace the grand story of God’s covenant faithfulness—from Noah to Abraham, Moses, David, and ultimately, to Jesus, whose new covenant reshapes everything." DQs : Do you doom scroll? If so, how does it affect your emotional or spiritual well-being? Have you incorporated any helpful practices to break from unhealthy information consumption patterns? What stood out in the sermon to you? Anything new, challenging, questionable, or particularly helpful? How have you seen Scripture misused to justify injustice (historically or today)? How do water (baptism), blood (communion), and fire (the Spirit) shape Christian identity today? Where do you sit on the scale of pacifism/non-violence to justified violence, and why? In Lent, we are invited to repentance and renewal. How can we live more fully into the covenant of Jesus this week? The Flood and Noah's Ark with Rev. Laura Wiens Genesis 6-8 The story of the Flood and Noah’s Ark is more than just a children’s tale. In a world filled with violence, God called Noah to build a life-saving vessel. Join us this Sunday as we explore Genesis 6-8 and consider what we can learn about God’s character through this portion of Scripture. --- For reflection & discussion: How does Genesis 6 describe the state of the world before the flood? What stands out to you about God’s response to human corruption and violence? In the sermon, we explored how God “destroyed destruction” through the flood. What does the flood say about God’s character? Some theologians compare the ark to the cross. What parallels do you see between Noah’s ark and Jesus’ sacrifice? The flood account shows God’s desire to restore shalom. Where do you see brokenness in the world today, and how might God be calling you to be part of His restoration? The story of Noah requires trust—trusting in God’s warning, God’s plan, and God’s promise. What areas of your life require greater trust in God right now? Corruption, Nephilim, and two Lamechs: The Hopeful Path in Wicked Times with Joshua LiemGenesis 4:17-6:5What story are you living in? Genesis 4-6 presents a stark contrast between two family lines—one rooted in violence and vengeance, the other in faith and hope. From Cain to Lamech to the mysterious Nephilim, we’ll explore how these ancient narratives shape our understanding of power, corruption, and God’s plan for redemption. Bring your Bible and join us this Sunday as we unpack this ancient text and its relevance for today. For reflection & discussion: In what ways do we still live in a “mythological world” today? What modern myths shape our culture? What do you imagine Enoch’s walk with God looking like? What are ways that you think he distinguished himself with the rest of the world? Who or what do you think the "Nephilim" were? How do different interpretations impact our understanding of Genesis 6? What does this passage say about the spread of sin and evil? How do we see similar patterns in history and today? What does Noah’s name ("This one will bring us comfort…") reveal about the longing for redemption in the biblical narrative? How does this story connect to Jesus and the gospel? What does it mean to live in His story rather than the world’s? What are the ways the stories of Cain, Lamech, and the Nephilim play out in our modern myths? How might we live counter-narratively?…

Fleeing Sin, Finding Grace with Rev. Laura Wiens Genesis 4 What do a towering ape statue, a crouching predator, and an unexpected act of grace have in common? They all help us understand a powerful truth from Genesis 4—how sin lurks and how God invites us into His loving embrace. This Sunday, join us as we explore the story of Cain and Abel, uncovering what we should flee from and whom we should run toward. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow in faith and discover the grace that is always waiting for us! For reflection & discussion: What stood out to you most from the sermon? Was there a particular idea, story, or Scripture that resonated with you? Genesis 4:7 describes sin as "crouching at the door." How do you see this imagery playing out in real life? Can you think of times when sin seemed small but later grew into something bigger? Cain’s anger led to destructive actions. What are some ways we can recognize and process anger in a healthy, God-honoring way before it leads to harm? The sermon highlighted how sin often hides in plain sight—whether in gossip, grudges, workaholism, or dishonesty. Which of these (or others) do you think are most overlooked in today’s culture? Cain struggled with comparing himself to Abel. How does comparison fuel negative emotions in our lives today? What are some ways to shift our focus back to God’s perspective? N.T. Wright’s illustration compared sin to a terrifying animal and Jesus to a beloved friend. What are some practical ways we can learn to “flee from sin” and “run toward Jesus” in our daily lives? The sermon mentioned that having trusted people in our lives can help us see sin more clearly. How can we cultivate relationships where we encourage one another in faith and accountability? Grasping for Godhood with Joshua Liem Genesis 2:25-3:24 In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve grasp for godhood, seeking wisdom and control on their own terms… and the world begins its descent into chaos. This Sunday, we’ll explore the deception of the serpent, the fall of humanity, and the profound contrast between their grasping and Christ’s humility in Philippians 2. Join us as we uncover the hope hidden within the curses and reflect on how God’s mercy points us to a Savior who did not grasp for power but gave himself for us. Come ready to wrestle with questions and discover a fresh perspective on this ancient story. DQs : What stands out to you about the serpent’s method of deception in Genesis 3? How do you see similar tactics at work today? Why do you think Adam and Eve’s sin was described as “grasping for godhood”? How does this contrast with Jesus’ humility in Philippians 2? What role does trust in God’s timing and provision play in resisting temptation? How can we grow in that trust? Discuss the nature of the consequences in Genesis 3. Do you see them as punishments, warnings, or something else? Why? How does the idea of Adam’s passivity shape your understanding of sin and responsibility? What lessons can we draw from it? Do you find it comforting or challenging that God sought Adam and Eve after they sinned? How does this shape your view of God’s character? What does it mean to you that Adam named his wife “Eve” after the curses were pronounced? Where do you see signs of hope even in difficult circumstances? Discover light in a dark, heavy world: the Myth of Messiah with Guest Speaker Bronwyn Spilsbury “Light” in Genesis-Revelation God shows us the pattern of light in the Bible and invites us to join Jesus on a shining path. What will it take, and who can find it? Is it even real? This Sunday, we’ll look at Light in Scripture. We’ll find God's pattern and see the path. So that when it's dark and heavy all around, we’ll know how to walk forward. We’ll also discover the meaning and message of “Messiah” and we will have a choice, as Jesus did, to be the light of the world. Are you ready? Pastor Bronwyn Spilsbury is an explorer, storyteller, teacher, and leader who served as a pastor for more than 20 years. She leads groups on pilgrimage to Bible lands to experience God's life and history with His people. Bronwyn looks forward to sharing insight and delight in God's Word and Presence with our community. For reflection & discussion: Comment on the pattern of God's light in Scripture. Does it seem to have a progression? What does that mean for us? Can you think of other Scripture that shows God bringing light to humanity? What difference did it make? What words characterize God's light, with examples? (peaceful, creative, disruptive, pure, purposeful, expansive...) What does "Messiah" mean, and what are 3 blessings from the Messiah's obedience, from the message? What does our collective name of "Christian" mean? How does it call us to be light, and what could result? What do you find most dark in the world? What prayer, pattern, or path of light can you embrace?…
"Why are you so afraid?" with Jessica Chan Some storms will 'break over the boat' or 'nearly swamp' us, but like the disciples in Mark's gospel, the right question to ask is; "who is this?" Who stands in the boat with us? For reflection & discussion: Read through the passage again, Mark 4:35-41. What stands out to you? What kinds of questions/observations do you have about the text? This passage recognizes the authority Jesus holds. [He holds the same authority as God/Yahweh] What does it mean to give Jesus all the authority in your life? what or who tends to make you feel secure (especially in a storm)? what helps you to “be not afraid!”? An idol is a good thing that we make into an ultimate thing. It takes the place God alone should hold in our hearts/lives. What good things are often made ultimate/treated as idols? If an idol has been given authority in our life, how do we give it back to Jesus?…

What does true worship look like in light of God's Sabbath rhythm? Join us as we explore how Sabbath keeping shapes our understanding of what God finds precious. We'll dive into Scripture to uncover how our worship - not just on Sundays, but every day - can align with God's heart for justice, healing, and rest for all of creation. --- For reflection & discussion: In what ways is it easy for your practice of Sabbath to become “sabbish,” more of a day off than a day of worship? How do you enjoy God? What practices, disciplines, or activities bring you genuine joy in God? What “false gods” are you tempted to worship, which, while they may be very good things (or not), pull you away from your holy center in God? What does it mean to you that the land itself needs rest? How might this understanding change our approach to environmental stewardship? Jesus often performed healings on the Sabbath. How might this inform our own Sabbath practices? What could "healing" look like in our context? How might adopting a "Sabbath imagination" change the way we engage with issues of justice, rest, and care for the vulnerable in our community? Exercise for the week: Plan a Sabbath feast! Ideally, do this together with the people around you, such as your small group or your family. Whether it’s 20 people for a giant cookout in the backyard or just one or two close friends out to dinner, plan out a meal together. Cook or order your favorite foods. Make sure there’s dessert. If you drink wine, save your best bottle for this meal. Don’t forget, this is an incredible chance to practice hospitality. If you have a home or apartment, host. If you know how to cook, use your skills. If you know people who don’t have community or family, bring them in. Reach across the lines that divide our society–socioeconomics, race, politics, etc. Jesus’ dream is for our dining room tables to look as diverse and beautiful as the kingdom of God, where every tribe, tongue, and nation is on display. Sabbath is a beautifully wrapped gift from God, designed for our rest and renewal. In Mark 2:23-3:6, Jesus teaches us that the Sabbath isn’t about rigid rules but about refreshment and restoration. It’s an invitation to step away from the relentless demands of life and receive the gift of rest. By ceasing from work, we align ourselves with God's design, experiencing the joy and flourishing He intends for us. Are you willing to open this gift and embrace the rest He offers? For reflection & discussion: Do societal pressures prevent you from experiencing true rest? If so, explain your experiences with this. How can practicing Sabbath help us reframe our identity from being based on productivity to being rooted in our identity as God’s children? What might legalism look like in today’s culture when it comes to rest and Sabbath? How does taking a day of rest reflect trust in God’s provision and care? What are some life-giving practices you could incorporate into your Sabbath to experience more joy and renewal? How can the concept of Sabbath serve as an anchor or “rope” in the stormy seasons of your life? ROOT TO FLOURISH: The Rhythm of Life | Sabbath 01 with Joshua Liem Colossians 1:26-2:10; Genesis 2:1-3 We seem to live in an unsustainably-accelerating world, out of sync with the created order. What if God is calling us to a different rhythm— one of rest, joy, and deep connection? Join us as we dive into a new sermon series this week, exploring the roots to flourishing, beginning with the biblical practice of Sabbath. DQs : What stuck out to you from the sermon? Was there a Scripture or thought that especially resonated with you? Is Sabbath part of your current life rhythm or not? If so, describe it. What obstacles get in the way of practicing Sabbath for you, either practically or emotionally? Pick a time to Sabbath. Give it a try. Sunday is the best day for most people because it is already a day we set aside to gather and worship. Traditionally, Sabbath would be observed from sundown on Friday until sundown Saturday. The midweek Sabbath (like Monday for most pastors) is best for those with non-traditional work schedules. Start where you are. If you cannot do a whole day, set aside 3-4 hours on a weekend and turn off your phone. Just stop . Get into a rhythm of Sabbath keeping on the same day and time. Your body will learn and anticipate it, living off of the energy and joy in the days after. Pick a beginning and ending ritual. Pick a few Sabbath activities to enter into the spirit of Sabbath: Read Sabbath by Dan Allender, pages 1-32. Listen to episode 1 of the Sabbath series from the Rule of Life podcast by Practicing the Way Sleep eight hours or more every night for an entire week. Fearless Connections: Embracing the Courage of True Friendship - Guest Dr. Mark Glanville John 15:12-17 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. We’re starting a new sermon series, FLOURISH! Over the next couple months, we’ll be exploring John 15-17 and how it relates to our vision of seeing our neighbours flourish. This Sunday, we’ll ask what it means to flourish in a world filled with competing visions of fruitfulness. How does abiding in Christ lead to true joy and fruitful living? Join us this week as we dive into John 15:1-11! -- Home Church Watch The Bible Project’s overview on the Gospel of John: https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/john-1-12/ https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/john-13-21/ What stood out to you in the videos? What do you love or appreciate about Jesus? What do you love or appreciate about John’s style? Read John 15:1-11. How does this text fit in the overall narrative? Discuss Mark Sayer’s 7 key belief statements of our age (below). How do they help us relate or bridge the gap between Scripture and our modern context? How do they affect the way we might evangelize or convey the Gospel? The highest good is individual freedom, happiness, self-definition, and self-expression. Traditions, religions, received wisdom, regulations, and social ties that restrict individual freedom, happiness, self-definition, and self-expression must be reshaped, deconstructed, or destroyed. The world will inevitably improve as the scope of individual freedom grows. Technology —in particular the internet—will motor this progression toward utopia. The primary social ethic is tolerance of everyone’s self-defined quest for individual freedom and self-expression. Any deviation from this ethic of tolerance is dangerous and must not be tolerated. Therefore social justice is less about economic or class inequality, and more about issues of equality relating to individual identity, self-expression, and personal autonomy. Humans are inherently good. Large-scale structures and institutions are suspicious at best and evil at worst. Forms of external authority are rejected and personal authenticity is lauded. Discuss the concept of discerning fruits in your life and in the broader culture. What are some indicators of true spiritual growth? How can we maintain unity and focus on Christ as the center of our church community, especially during times of change and uncertainty? Share about a time when God's pruning in your life led to greater spiritual fruitfulness. What did you learn from that experience? As a church, how can we better embody Christ's love and joy to those outside our community?…

Let’s reclaim our calling as gardeners in a world that urgently needs hope and beauty. --- When you hear about the Anthropocene and eco-anxiety, what feelings arise in you—fear, guilt, motivation, or something else? Have you ever felt that your worth is tied primarily to your productivity? How does Genesis 2 challenge that? “It is not good for man to be alone.” How does loneliness show up in our modern context, and where have you found meaningful community? Reading Scripture Well with Joshua Liem Luke 24 This Sunday, we’re diving into an exciting new series that starts with one essential question: How should we read the Bible? With so many interpretations and debates, it can be overwhelming to know what to believe. But here’s the good news: Scripture points us to Jesus. It reveals who he is, shapes how we live, and helps us discover truth through the lenses of tradition, reason, and experience. Join us as we learn to read the Bible well before we begin our journey in Genesis next week. For reflection & discussion: What does it mean to say that all Scripture points to Jesus? How does that impact the way you read the Bible? Is there any difficulty with this saying? What are some ways Jesus’ life, teachings, and actions challenge how we interpret Scripture? Think about myths or stories you’ve believed about life (e.g., success, happiness, identity). How does the Bible offer a counter-narrative? Which of the four elements (Scripture, tradition, reason, experience) do you naturally lean on most when interpreting the Bible? Why? ROOT TO FLOURISH: Godliness and Contentment Beyond Riches with Joshua Liem | ALMSGIVING 02 1 Timothy 6:6-19 NET This Sunday we dive further into the discipline of almsgiving, reflecting on what it means to pursue godliness with contentment. How might true contentment change your relationship with what you have? Join us as we explore how generosity shapes our lives and reflects God’s heart, and maybe even discover the secret of contentment. For reflection & discussion: If you were to measure your level of contentment on a scale of 1 to 10 – where 1 is feeling the anxiety of greed and a desire for more, and 10 is feeling non-anxious and satisfied with what you have – where would you plot yourself right now? Where are you experiencing a lack of margin in your life in your relationships, schedule, or finances? What is one area in your life that you could possibly simplify (schedule, possessions, finances, etc.)? Name some of the best things in your life right now. What are you most grateful for? Exercises: Basic: Identify something you own that you do not need, and give it away or sell it and give the money to someone in need. Do a budget session on excel/google sheets: Calculate your income per month. Also calculate any expected bonuses, tips, side gigs, or tax refunds per year. Calculate expenses. You can look up “budget template” from Google or ChatGPT for an example. Categorize your expenses, fitting each line into one of four categories: need, enjoy, save, give. Prayerfully go through each item and consider: How am I meant to properly steward this resource? Reach: Pick a room or area of your life, go through it thoughtfully and peacefully, and simplify it down to the essentials. This could be your closet, bedroom, living room, kitchen, garage, etc. As you quietly observe each item in the room, consider holding it up before God. Ask yourself questions: Do I really need this? Could I live without this? Would my life possibly be better without this unnecessary item? Rather than asking ourselves how we can get more, we’re pondering how we could live with less. Make four piles for the unnecessary items: 01. Throw away. 02. Recycle. 03. Sell. 04. Give away. Give your extra stuff away. You can give to the poor via the Salvation Army or a local donation drop, or give directly to someone you know. Go sit in the decluttered room or area, and pay attention to how you feel. Spend a few minutes in gratitude to God for the goodness of ordinary life.
