In this episode, we dive into the shocking 2016 case of Benjamin Jay Barber, one of the first individuals convicted under Oregon’s groundbreaking ‘revenge porn’ legislation House Bill 2596 — a groundbreaking law criminalizing the unlawful dissemination of intimate images. This and other pivotal cases shed light on the darker corners of the internet, the loopholes in privacy laws, and the consequences of weaponizing intimate content. (Just one of the many reasons that we can’t have nice things).
Barber, sentenced to a mere six months in jail and five years of probation, became a grim example of how revenge porn devastates victims and exposes the urgent need for stronger protections. While his case may have proved a legal landmark, it also revealed significant gaps in enforcement—raising questions about why perpetrators like Barber often avoid being classified as sex offenders. Why do we still struggle to balance free speech with basic human decency? Caitlyn doesn’t hold back as she critiques the societal norms and legal blind spots that let predators exploit others with impunity.
But this isn’t just about one man. In this episode, we also examine the broader cultural and legal implications of cases like Barber's. From the shocking up-skirt photo case at a Target store in Beaverton, Oregon to the broader prevalence of nonconsensual pornography, we explore how systemic failures allow predators to thrive—and what changes are still desperately needed. Listen as we unravel the devastating consequences of these crimes, the problematic gaps in justice, and the role of – you guessed it, the always problematic, patriarchy, in perpetuating these abuses.

After more than four decades of silence, Parabon Nanolabs and cutting-edge genetic genealogy are reigniting public interest in three men who were—separately and confusingly—all referred to as the ‘Freeway Killer’: Patrick Kearney, William Bonin, and Randy Kraft. Kraft, convicted of 16 murders in California, is suspected of killing dozens more young men across the West Coast—often targeting Marines, hitchhikers, and teenagers. Many of his victims, if his infamous “scorecard” is to be believed, likely remain unidentified to this day. In this episode, we examine the recent identifications of Larry Eugene Parks and Michael Ray Schlict—both previously known only as John Does. Their cases, reopened thanks to advances in DNA technology and genetic genealogy, mirror the disturbing patterns seen in Randy Kraft’s known crimes: victims hogtied, drugged, mutilated, and left near highways like I-5. We explore the haunting evidence that investigators believe may link Kraft to these cold cases—including personal belongings, drug traces, and the cryptic list of coded names that earned him his nickname: the “Scorecard Killer.” If you're drawn to forensic breakthroughs, unsolved murders, and the darkest corners of the 1970s and ’80s true crime landscape, this case will stay with you. Summertime is upon us! We’ve penciled in some time to sip rosé and soak up the sunshine so we’ll be sprinkling in some periodic breaks from our own content creations. Of course, we’d never leave you high and dry. This week, our friends Shea & Jody of the Rainy Day Rabbit Holes podcast share the story of one of the weirdest—and most unbelievable—government projects in Pacific Northwest history. In 1948, Idaho launched one of the strangest wildlife relocation efforts in U.S. history—dropping live beavers out of airplanes into the remote wilderness. Sounds like folklore, but it’s true. Join their exploration of this bizarre historical event in depth: who greenlit it, how they pulled it off, and what happened to the beavers who took the plunge. The story combines government problem-solving at its most eccentric, animal relocation tactics of the 20th century, and the lasting legacy of this truly wild conservation effort. On October 1st, 2015, tragedy struck the quiet town of Roseburg, Oregon, home to the Umpqua Community College campus. When 26-year-old Christopher Sean Harper Mercer opened fire, it became the scene of Oregon’s deadliest shooting. He fired erratically on both students and staff, senselessly killing nine people, wounding several, and leaving countless others with unimaginable trauma. Investigators would slowly uncover the story of the man behind the violence and what led him down such a deadly and destructive path. Much of his time was spent, either isolated, or in the darkest corners of the internet. That’s where his penchant for violent, hateful ideologies seemingly began. In this episode, we peel back the layers of a deeply disturbing story—exploring Harper Mercer’s childhood, his struggles with mental health, his obsession with guns, and his dogmatic descent into incel and racist philosophies. As we remember the victims, this case serves as a grim reminder of America’s ongoing mass shooting crisis. While this story undeniably centers around violence and loss, it’s also a story of resilience and humanity even amidst horror and in the face of tragedy. We also honor the incredible bravery of survivors, including Chris Mintz, a U.S. Army veteran and student who risked his life to save others during the attack. This is the story of survival, heroism, and tragedy in Snyder Hall. Hana and her adoptive brother, Immanuel, were brought from Ethiopia into what was supposed to be a loving home, but they instead found themselves in an abusive environment of isolation, starvation, and cruel punishment. Perhaps the warning signs were too subtle, because no interventions came in time to prevent the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded in May 2011. Far too often abuse is only exposed in hindsight. Larry and Carri Williams appeared to be a kind, wholesome couple devoted to raising their family in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. But behind closed doors, their strict fundamentalist Christian beliefs and harsh parenting practices would lead to a horrifying case of abuse, ultimately resulting in Hana’s tragic death. In this episode, we examine the rise of the homeschooling movement particularly in fundamentalist Christian homes, the influence of controversial child-rearing books like To Train Up a Child, as well as some of the troubling adoption practices that led us here. Hana’s death laid bare the dangers of abusive parenting ideologies and the failures in adoption oversight. She endured years of mistreatment before her body sadly succumbed to the persistent abuse that she had already endured for years at the Williams family’s rural home. What red flags were ignored along the way? Can justice ever truly be served? Join us as we uncover the heartbreaking story of abuse, control, and religious extremism that devastated a community. In June 2013, 19-year-old Maureen Leianuhea “Anu” Kelly set off on a camping trip with friends in the vast and unspoiled wilderness Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The backdrop was both scenic and rugged. What was supposed to be a carefree adventure outdoors turned into a chilling mystery when Anu walked away from their campsite—completely nude, save for her fanny pack—and never returned. Despite extensive search efforts, the only trace of her was a set of footprints leading toward a road. Her extremely limited supplies, tucked into the fanny pack she’d donned, would do little to stave off any number of threats she may have encountered in the woods. Over the years, theories have swirled - while she may have been seeking a spiritual awakening her whereabouts have remained unknown since that fateful night. Did she fall victim to the harsh wilderness? Or is it possible that something far more sinister happened that night? Join us as we retrace Anu’s final known steps, explore the many theories surrounding her mysterious disappearance, and discuss the latest developments—including the discovery of human remains in the Big Lava Bed located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in August of 2024. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, just northeast of Sacramento, Nevada City, CA, is a historic Gold Rush town. Founded in 1849, it was one of the most important mining towns in California—though getting there wasn’t easy, as some early settlers traveled via the same treacherous route as the Donner Party. In this episode, we explore the National Exchange Hotel, a California Historical Landmark that has hosted many notable figures during the Gold Rush Era. Present day, the hotel is known to have some ghostly guests - a glimpse into a business meeting from the past, a lady in white roaming the halls, and a ghostly child seen riding a tricycle. We also step inside Firehouse No. 1, now a museum, where flying cabinet doors, phantom footsteps, and a red-haired woman playing a haunted organ have been reported. Then, we visit the Red Castle Inn, home to the lingering spirit of the Gray Lady, a devoted nanny who still checks on guests—sometimes by gently brushing their forehead while they sleep. Plus, we uncover some creepy history—like the Foreign Miners’ Tax, which unfairly targeted Chinese and Hispanic gold miners—and dive into the wild life of Lola Montez, a fiery performer known for her infamous Spider Dance (yes, it’s connected to tarantulas). Is Nevada City one of the most haunted places in California? Tune in for ghost stories, history, and plenty of spooky fun! Visit our website! Find us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Patreon, & more! On June 30th, 2001, in the quiet town of Hood River, locals would be saddened by the discovery of Eric Tamiyasu’s body in his rural home. But nothing could prepare them for the shocking realization that would come just a day later following his autopsy. He had been shot three times in the head, his body left undisturbed in his bed for nearly a week prior to the gruesome discovery. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing was stolen. It appeared that whoever entered his home that night had one purpose—murder. On the day his body was discovered authorities made an inexplicable decision: they burned Eric’s mattress before determining his cause of death. Whether this was an act of negligence or the intentional destruction of evidence remains a point of controversy. The case, which seemed solvable in its early days, quickly became muddled by speculation, rumors, and lost forensic opportunities. Three main suspects emerged, though some speculate about a potential fourth. A business partner accused of embezzlement. A supposed close friend who knew more than he should have. A sheriff whose involvement in the case raised serious questions. There was even talk of a romantic rivalry, one that could have turned deadly without Eric even realizing. With each revelation, the mystery surrounding Eric’s death seemingly only deepened. Despite being featured on Unsolved Mysteries, no arrests have ever been made, and his family continues to seek justice. Was this a crime of passion, a financial dispute turned deadly, or something even more sinister? As we unravel the timeline, the evidence, and the missteps in the investigation, one thing becomes clear—someone knows the truth about what happened to Eric Tamiyasu. Visit our website! Are you curious—or perhaps a bit wary—of the "D word" (demons)? This episode dives into the fascinating and chilling world of exorcisms , the ritualistic practice of expelling supposed evil spirits. We explore the history of exorcisms, from ancient Mesopotamia to the modern-day Pacific Northwest! We discuss the three stages of possession —infestation, oppression, and possession—and how exorcists differentiate between paranormal activity and a mental heath crisis. And unpack how the fascinating (and sometimes absurd) elements of exorcisms, like blaming Ouija boards, drug use, or the oft-cited trope of "Native American burial grounds," play into possession stories. This episode isn’t just about the sensational aspects of exorcisms—it balances spooky stories, thoughtful insights, and a touch of humor to explore humanity’s age-old battle with the evil. In this episode we drive into the Gruesome Crimes of Jake Bird – Tacoma’s Ax-Killer, possibly one of America's most prolific, yet lesser-known, serial killers. Though he was born in Louisiana, he spent much of the short time that he wasn’t incarcerated traveling across the country as a transient laborer, allegedly leaving a bloody trail of unsolved murders. However, it wasn’t until he committed a horrifying double homicide in Tacoma, Washington, that he was finally caught, tried, and ultimately sentenced to death. Jake Bird was arrested in 1947 after murdering Bertha and Beverly Kludt in their Tacoma home, using an axe he found on their property. That might seem like the end of the story but Bird’s reign of terror didn’t stop there—he shockingly confessed to being involved in over 40 additional murders throughout the United States, potentially making him one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history, as well as, a potential suspect in crimes that occurred in numerous states all over the country at the time. This episode also explores the chilling "Jake Bird Hex.” His infamous statement given before the court left many with an eerie sense of unease, particularly once several people connected to his trial met their end in short succession following his sentencing. This narrative is rich in historical detail (and a dash of superstition) and may leave you questioning whether the curse of Jake Bird still lingers today. In this chilling episode, we delve into the horrific crimes of Harvey Louis Carignan, infamously known as "The Hammer Man," "The Hitcher," and "The Want Ad Killer." Born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1927, Carignan's early life was marred by abuse, but it’s his gruesome actions in adulthood that cement his place in the annals of true crime. Though many times the background of a killer can be informative when trying to analyze and perhaps learn to better understand the motivation for their brutal crimes, we won’t dwell on his early years. Instead opting to skip ahead to his adulthood. Some people do foolish things amidst a midlife crisis, Carignan embarked on a spree of sadistic violence spanning multiple states over numerous years. Starting with the disappearance of 15-year-old Kathy Miller in 1973, we unravel a series of brutal attacks that terrorized the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We explore Carignan’s early crimes - the heinous acts, his evasion of justice, and the ultimate downfall that led to nearly five decades behind bars. Join us as we piece together the timeline of terror, revealing the twisted mind of a violent, and often times bizarrely unpredictable man. In this episode we’ll unravel the haunting events that took place within the walls of an upscale home, belonging to a prominent family in the community in the 1930s. It was none other than the Mattson family home, set against the backdrop of the affluent Point Defiance Park District in Tacoma, Washington. Sound familiar? You might remember an eerily similar case - the kidnapping & ransom of George Weyerhaeuser. On a cold winter night just days after Christmas, what started as a peaceful evening with popcorn and root beer quickly turned into a nightmare as the youngest Mattson child was abducted at gunpoint from his own living room, sparking the oldest unsolved kidnapping case in Tacoma's history. Despite the FBI’s best efforts, the mysterious kidnapper vanished without a trace, but not without leaving a bizarre ransom note behind. Though the family complied with the kidnapper's demands, Charles was never returned. Days of frantic searching and police efforts led to a tragic discovery: Charles Mattson's lifeless body was found over a week later in a snow-covered field near Everett, Washington, mere miles from his home. We explore the details of that fateful night, the frantic search that ensued, and the eventual heartbreaking discovery that would leave a community shattered and a case unsolved to this day. Join us as we puzzle out the complexities of the investigation, the media frenzy that hindered the case, and the lasting impact this horrific crime had on the Mattson family and the broader Tacoma community. Through historical accounts and meticulous research, we aim to bring to light the untold details of a case that has left generations questioning who was responsible for this heinous act. In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, this week’s journey takes us to the enchanting city of Galway, Ireland - a sister city to Seattle, Washington. Galway is not just known for it's stunning scenery or songs about pretty girls, it is also steeped in folklore and mysteries that rival even our own haunted locales in the Pacific Northwest. We begin our exploration with the whimsical world of fairies, delving into the ancient tales of Knockma Hill, where the fairy king Finvarra reigns. But be warned, for disturbing the fairy cairns or forts may incur the wrath of these mischievous beings. Moving on to the eerie depths of Galway's lakes, we encounter a plethora of cryptids, from the enigmatic creatures of Black Lake and Coole Lake to the terrifying Loathsome Creature of Lough Fadda. Could these lake monsters be descendants of the legendary Dobhar-chú? Our journey takes a darker turn as we delve into the phenomenon of Spontaneous Human Combustion, unraveling the tragic fate of Michael Faherty and the mysteries surrounding his unfortunate demise. We wouldn't dare leave the spirits of Galway behind. From phantom pirate ships haunting the coast to the tragic tale of Castle Daly's final party turned massacre, the ghosts of Ireland's past linger amidst the ruins. We encounter the Knocking Girl of Rathpeak House, whose ghostly presence seeks solace in the mortal realm. And who could forget the sorrowful Phantom Sad Old Man of Maam Cross, a specter from the depths of history? But perhaps the most peculiar of all Galway legends are the Short Men in Green of the Aran Islands, whose encounter leaves a young boy questioning the boundaries between myth and reality. Join us as we traverse the landscapes of Galway, where every shadow holds a secret and every corner is steeped in legend. For in this land of ancient tales and modern mysteries, the line between fact and folklore blurs into the realm of the unknown. Join us on a gripping journey through the life and crimes of Frederick Darren Muskopf, better known as Darren Berg, a man whose insatiable thirst for wealth led him down a dark and deceitful path. From his humble beginnings in Grants Pass, Oregon, to his rise as a notorious figure in the Pacific Northwest, Berg's story is one of ambition, deception, and shattered dreams. As a child, Berg created an alter ego, Rod Taylor, to compensate for his perceived shortcomings, stemming from a tumultuous upbringing marked by familial abuse and a relentless drive for acceptance. Despite early signs of trouble, Berg's desire for success propelled him through the ranks of fraternity leadership and into the world of entrepreneurship. However, Berg's ventures were tainted by financial mismanagement and, eventually, outright fraud. From bank fraud to elaborate Ponzi schemes, Berg's criminal activities defrauded investors of over $200 million, funding a lifestyle of excess and opulence reminiscent of Bernie Madoff. But Berg's empire crumbled under the weight of his deceit, leading to an 18-year prison sentence for wire fraud, money laundering, and bankruptcy fraud. Yet, his audacious escape from prison in Atwater, California, adds a surreal twist to his saga, leaving authorities and victims in a state of uncertainty. Join us as we delve into the intricate web of Berg's crimes, unraveling the devastating impact on his victims, serving as a cautionary tale of greed and deception in the Pacific Northwest. This story unfolds in a remote countryside, where harsh terrains, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions paint the backdrop of a mysterious land. With winter's arrival, daylight dwindles to a mere handful of hours, while summers bring almost 23 continuous hours of daylight. Can you guess the geographic location? Stick around, and this answer will be unveiled. The Guðmundur and Geirfinnur Cases - On January 26, 1974, Guðmundur Einarsson, aged 18, goes missing. When he was last seen he appeared to be intoxicated. Geirfinnur Einarsson disappears in November 1974 under mysterious circumstances. Our tale revolves around Erla, a girl born into a family marked by both glamour and fabulous parties but also financial turmoil and legal troubles. Sævar, a rebellious young man, crosses paths with Erla in an unexpected encounter that sets off a series of events, blending teenage love and crime. As Erla and Sævar navigate their tumultuous relationship, Iceland becomes the stage for the infamous Guðmundur and Geirfinnur cases, featuring mysterious disappearances, questionable confessions, and a justice system veering towards incompetence and abuse. Join us as we unravel the layers of this true crime saga, exploring the cultural quirks of Iceland, such as the complexities of patronymic surnames, and the shocking revelations that shook this small Viking nation. Patronymic surnames trace lineage to the father's given name, a common practice in Iceland. The twists and turns of this story lead to false confessions, state-sanctioned torture, and a quest for justice that spans decades. Six suspects sign murder confessions under extreme conditions: solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, water torture. Memory distrust syndrome and false confessions; coerced details lead to more arrests. The victims, Guðmundur and Geirfinnur, seemingly lost in the shuffle, serve as a haunting reminder of the collateral damage caused by a justice system gone awry. As we delve into the lives of the accused and the victims, you'll witness the aftermath of a case that echoes through time, with a surprising conclusion that leaves lingering questions about the pursuit of truth and the cost of justice. In the end a legal resolution is achieved, for the previously detained suspects, but the individuals at the center of the case remain missing and presumed dead. This case highlights the impact on the accused's lives; the need for justice reform and victim-centric narratives. Tune in as we journey to the edge of the world, exploring the dark secrets and enigmatic landscapes of Iceland. Presumed Murder at the End of the World. This week we’re bringing to you a special guest co-host – Caitlyn’s other partner in crime & brand-spankin’ new husband, Chris. It’s all fun and games – unless your fiancé is a true crime podcaster with a knack for finding your special brand of nightmare fuel. Susi Larsen, had a promising future. She was a 24-year-old graphic designer and vibrant young woman living in Lake Oswego. In August of 1996 she was eagerly preparing for her wedding that September to her fiancé Keith Hibley. The couple had a unique love story, having met while working at Mattel in California—Susi in the Barbie division and Keith in Hot Wheels. It was just weeks until their big day when Susi showed up at the Tigard apartment of a male acquaintance to pick up jewelry she intended to purchase for the wedding. But that was before suddenly going missing without a trace. When Susi didn’t show up for work the next day, her loved ones grew alarmed and launched a frantic search and quickly involved law enforcement. Their investigation would reveal that it was the same male acquaintance she had visited, Billy Oatney Jr., that was the last known person to see Susi. He quickly became a person of interest after a routine traffic stop revealed a whole host of suspicious items in his vehicle. Though Susi’s mysterious disappearance would not remain unsolved for long, the heartbreaking details of her final moments would leave her family and friends shattered and in disbelief. Susi left a legacy of love that would carry those closest to her through not one, but two trials, for the man responsible for her brutal death. We’ve included information about the memorial fund established partly in her honor below. Maude Kerns Art Center Susi Larsen and Cameron Serbu Memorial Scholarship Fund: Contributions can be made to support art instruction for deserving children in Eugene & the surrounding area. David Brame's career and family life seemed picture-perfect. He ascended to the top of the Tacoma Police Department, earning respect & accolades along the way. When he was appointed as the police chief in 2001, he had it all: a thriving career, a loving wife, and two beautiful, young children. He rapidly rose through the ranks, having multiple close family members in law enforcement lent to the increasing potency of his power on the force. Behind the facade of success, Brame's life was riddled with darkness and deceit. A portrait of Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" hung in his office, a symbol of the sinister power he wielded. Delve into the tragic tale of Tacoma’s top cop family. The story of David Brame, along with his wife and children shook the communities of Tacoma, Gig Harbor, and surrounding areas of Washington state to their very core. The stories of violent and coercive behavior, as well as sexual misconduct behind the scenes while David Brame served as the Tacoma Police will leave you outraged. Beneath the wholesome all-American image that was portrayed, there were dark, disturbing secrets. Brame's career was marred by accusations of rape and sexual coercion, covered up by the very department sworn to protect the public. The manipulation and control extended into his personal life. His wife, Crystal, endured years of psychological and physical abuse. Her attempts to escape his grasp were met with terrifying retaliation and manipulation. She finally got the courage to file for divorce leading to a cascade of escalating threats and intimidation from her recently estranged husband David Brame, culminating in a tragic murder-suicide. On April 26, 2003, Brame shot Crystal in a public parking lot, before taking his own life, leaving their two children to witness the horrifying event. We'll uncover the chilling details of David Brame's abuse, the horrifying systemic corruption that enabled his actions, and the devastating impact to not only those closest to the couple, but the community at large. It's a sobering reminder of the dangers so many women encounter. Domestic violence continues to threaten the lives of women and children the world-over, but the haunting depiction of that abuse paired with a partner wielding nearly unchecked power emphasizes the urgent need for accountability within law enforcement and society as a whole, particularly because, far too often, it’s a matter of life and death. Listen to the heart-wrenching episode now to understand the full story behind the headlines and the legacy of Crystal Brame, whose family continues to fight for domestic violence awareness and justice. Can you imagine being a high school sports star with a bright future, only to find yourself orchestrating a notorious crime years later? Get ready to be captivated by the rollercoaster life of Anthony Curcio, whose journey from promising athlete to devil-may-care criminal defies belief. You'll be gripping your seats as we tell the dramatic story of Anthony Curcio whose life took an unexpectedly wild turn after a devastating sportsing injury (apparently contact sports are dangerous) and subsequent battle with addiction (though not quite as potentially deadly as opiates). The stakes rise dramatically as we recount Anthony's meticulously planned caper, a plot so outrageous, and at times comical, it rivals Hollywood's best heist films. Dressed as a landscaper and using Craigslist decoys, Anthony executed an audacious robbery involving pepper spray and an aquatic getaway that feels bizarrely cinematic - without ever setting foot in a bank. What can we say? The man had a flair for the dramatic. Maybe that explains his downfall. Someone caught him, in flagrante delicto, before his big bank day and that singular tip from a surprising source played a critical role in his undoing. When the investigation led detectives to his wife, Emily, his double life of lavish spending and debauchery-fueled stints in Vegas was revealed and he had nowhere to run. Finally, we navigate the chaotic aftermath following the heist, and it got chaotic quick - just minutes after the heist. It’s a story filled with comical mishaps and nearly unbelievable getaways. From a stolen inner tube to DNA evidence from a spit cup, the story is both suspenseful and at times humorously bizarre, sometimes a little gross. We wrap up with a poignant reminder of the consequences of crime and addiction, and of course, a whimsical look at the quirky connection between Anthony and none other than his namesake, DB Cooper. This episode promises a thrilling blend of drama, humor, and maybe even a touch of nostalgia. Don't miss it! ✨👻 Don't miss us at True Crime Fest Northwest 8/30 - 9/1! PNW Haunts & Homicides

What really happened to Jerry Stomps on the fateful day of his disappearance near Oxbow Park? Join us as we explore the baffling true crime story of Jerry and Hazelynn Stomps. The story begins with the harrowing discovery of an injured Hazelynn Stomps near the Gordon Creek Bridge in the rural community of Corbett, Oregon. For good Samaritans Gerald Ford and James Pogue, that startling discovery sets off a surprising chain of events revealing just how quickly a love story can turn into tragedy. We’ll put together the puzzling pieces of the unsettling case beginning with a bizarre incident involving Jerry and Lynn at a local park. Their meeting with a potential buyer for their fishing boat takes a dark turn when an unknown man attacks them, leaving Lynn in the hospital severely injured, and Jerry missing. As we piece together the events, Lynn provides crucial details about their meeting with a man named Dave, raising questions about the true motives behind this violent encounter and the confusion that ensues. Troubling clues are unearthed as we continue to examine the investigation, following the violent attack that Lynn described. For one, Lynn's suspicious behavior starts raising eyebrows as the search and rescue efforts prove fruitless. We’ll discuss this and other aspects of the investigation leading us to the discovery of vital evidence including a concealed gun in, of all things, a fanny pack found in the couple’s home. With mitochondrial DNA evidence linking the human remains found on their property (*Spoiler Alert!*) to Jerry, a troubling suspicion becomes harsh reality for the couple’s family & friends. Maybe the Stomps’ marriage wasn’t exactly a story book romance, after all. Finally, we’ll reveal the prosecution’s theory about Lynn's ill-fated attempt to stage her husband's “accidental” death, as well as reflect on her conviction, and the massive financial fallout for their family. In Part 2 we’re diving back into the harrowing tale of Steve Titus, a man wrongfully convicted of first-degree rape in Washington State. Following his arrest, he was taken aback to realize that the entire system seemed determined to see him imprisoned despite his pleas of innocence. It flew in the face of what many who are unacquainted assume about the criminal justice system. No system can be perfect, but as an innocent man, he felt certain that of his vindication in the ultimate fight for truth and justice. Despite initially favoring acquittal, once deliberation came to a close, the jury ultimately delivered a guilty verdict. We’ll explore the faulty identification process – how a faulty photo lineup and deeply flawed identification led to Steve's conviction. We’ll also discuss the relentless efforts by award-winning investigative journalist Paul Henderson, and new defense attorney Jeff Jones to uncover the truth. Their committed efforts would reveal significant flaws in the prosecution's case, casting doubt on the integrity of the police investigation led by Detective Ron Parker. Discover the shocking inconsistencies in the evidence and the dubious actions of Detective Ron Parker that do far more than simply cast doubt on Titus’s guilt. Now that’s dedication! Without which – it’s very possible that the eventual discovery of the real perpetrator, Edward Lee King, may never have materialized. This episode unpacks some of the systemic failures of the justice system. Our discussion attempts to center the toll exacted on not only Steve Titus – but also his loved ones. The consequences, both emotional and financial, were severe and deeply troubling, as was, sadly, the eventual vindication that came too late for a man who had already lost so much. Join us we unravel the intricate details of this case, highlighting the critical role that ethical professionals working within the law enforcement and journalistic fields can play in our communities, and the justice system. In this episode, we (sand)worm into the fascinating world of "Beetlejuice," the iconic 1988 film that turned the haunted house trope on its head. Join us as we explore the origins, behind-the-scenes trivia , and lasting impact of this darkly comedic masterpiece. "Beetlejuice" emerged as a reverse narrative to the popular horror film "Poltergeist," where instead of a ghostly entity terrorizing a family, it's the human family causing chaos among the deceased. The movie, directed by Tim Burton and featuring Michael Keaton's memorable performance as the mischievous Betelgeuse, became a cult classic and a box office success. (Sucks Yes!) We delve into the film's production and fun facts, including Tim Burton's initial struggles to convince the cast to embrace the quirky and bizarre nature of the story. Did you know that the title character, despite his lasting impact, has only about 14.5 minutes of screen time? From the film's unique visual style inspired by B movie special effects, "Beetlejuice" remains a timeless blend of horror, comedy, and "dirty old man". We also discuss the proposed sequel, "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian," which never materialized but had fans buzzing with curiosity.
