When Gina Stephens was a television producer and got dropped in a new city, one of her first moves was to grab a city magazine to try to learn about the town. After getting out of TV and having worked with a few different publications in North Carolina, in 2015 she decided the time was perfect to create that magazine for Raleigh that she would have loved to have picked up as a new-to-Raleigh television producer: Raleigh Magazine.
Five years later and Raleigh Magazine's mix of short, informative stories on what's happening and longer features on people doing interesting things in the city and its hybrid distribution model--subscriptions plus pick-up options--have made in a success story at a time when other print publications have struggled. We talked to Gina about starting a magazine, the experiences that prepared her for it, and what she's learned as a publisher.
We'd also like to give Gina a special "thank you" for being our first remotely recorded guest as we continue to adjust our normal routines and work from home as much as possible. We hope to continue with regular Podcast Raleigh content and we appreciate guests being willing to work with us! For the time being, we will also forgo the pre-interview conversations.
Thanks to our sponsors, Steele Residential and Papa Murphy's Pizza of Raleigh!
