One Big Story - Week 1 You know, the two most common things parents hear when they’re putting their kids to bed are… “Can I have a drink?” and “Can you read me a story.” It’s been said that our need to hear stories…in some ways…is a natural part of our make-up as humans. And just as water quenches our thirst…stories somehow have a way of hydrating our minds. That’s why we dream in stories. That’s why, when Lucy and I go to see the grandkids, they want to set on our laps so that we can read them a story. You see, stories have a way of coming into our lives and grabbing a hold of our hearts. And the interesting thing is this, we look everywhere to find them except the one place that has the most incredible stories that you could ever imagine...God’s Word. This Sunday, June 14th, I’m starting our new summer series called, “One Big Story”, that will start in Genesis and go through the book of Revelation. It will give us an overview of the Bible, not in depth, but a good overview that will help us to discover our story as we unpack God’s story. Hey Westside... Lucy and I made it back safely from Cape Town, South Africa. We had an amazing time with family and were able to see some amazing places and some amazing things. As I mentioned last week, Cape Town is an area of extremes. You have the very wealthy but also the extremely poor. Some of the Townships, which are made up of tin shacks, are overloaded with people as well as violence. But in spite of that, as you drive through those areas, you still see kids smiling and playing and enjoying the life they have. Seeing that, helps me to put things in perspective. I’m excited to be back with you all this week and I hope that everyone will make it a priority to be here. I really want to be able to worship with all our Westside family. We will continue in our series called... “The Cast of Christmas”. This week we will look at the part the shepherds played. I can’t wait to share this powerful message with each and every one of you. This is one of those messages that has the potential to be life changing. We are still collecting $25.00 Target gift cards and stuff for gift bags for the “Single Mom’s Ministry, Thrive”. Hey All... As I say every week, it was another amazing service. God's Spirit has really been moving in and through His church here at Westside and it's such a blessing to be a part of what He is doing. Here are some highlights from this past Sunday... • We had 2 new families make Westside their home; Brian & Bonita Stanley and Tina Phillips. • We packed 76 boxes for Operation Christmas Child and devoured 12 large pizzas in the process. Thank you so much church, you’re amazing... • All the food plus extra came in and is being delivered today to Lewisville Elementary school. This food plays a huge part in feeding 90 families for Thanksgiving. Thank you so much church, again, you’re amazing... Here’s what’s coming up... • Our Kid’s Ministry is sponsoring a “Parent’s Night Out”, tonight, November 22nd from 5:30-9pm. The kids will be enjoying dinner, games, worship and other activities. Contact Tori for all the info. • Don’t forget to unite with me in prayer tomorrow night @ 6pm as we cover the message, our staff and our church in prayer during our series on spiritual warfare. So, set aside a few minutes wherever you may be to pray for God’s protection and our growth in Jesus. • We have a great opportunity this holiday season to reach out with the love of Jesus and help others who desperately need it. Here's a couple opportunities for this week... 1. There's a family that lost almost everything in a house fire who is a neighbor of one of our families as well as, their kids go to school with some of our kids. We have the opportunity to help provide the money for their kids to have school lunches. This would be a huge encouragement to these parents. 2. We also have a few families in our church that need help as well. The holiday season is a tough time and we want to be a support to them. So, this Sunday morning, November 24th, we will be taking up a special love offering to relieve some of the stress and help with these needs. If you bring a check, write Community Outreach in the memo line. • Our next “Women’s Bible Study” will be meeting this coming Tuesday night, November 26th at 6:45pm at the church. This is our last week in our series called, "This Means War...the Reality of Spiritual Warfare" and our focus will be on unpacking the armor of God. To prepare your hearts for what we'll be unpacking this week, I want to encourage you to read Ephesians 6:10-18. Hey Westside... If you weren’t able to be with us last week, it was another amazing service. God's Spirit has really been moving in and through His church here at Westside and it's such a blessing to be apart of what He is doing. That's why I encourage everyone, each and every week to be here because I don't want you to miss what God is up too. We only have 2 weeks left in our series called, "This Means War...the Reality of Spiritual Warfare" and our focus will be on how we can overcome the enemy's attacks. To prepare your hearts for what we'll be unpacking this week, I want to encourage you to read Ephesians 6:10-13. Here’s what’s coming up... · Our next “Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study” will be tomorrow morning at 7:30 am at the church. I want to encourage all of our men to give it a try. It's an awesome time of food, fellowship and Bible Study. · Don’t forget to unite with me in prayer tomorrow night @ 6pm as we cover the message, our staff and our church in prayer during our series on spiritual warfare. So, set aside a few minutes wherever you may be to pray for God’s protection and our growth in Jesus. · Our "Operation Christmas Child Packing Party" will be right after church on Sunday so I want to encourage everyone to stay and join in on all the excitement. We will be providing Pizza and drinks for everyone. · If you took one of our Thanksgiving meal sheets, don't forget to bring in your food items. If you didn't have an opportunity to pick one up, I'll have a few more available on Sunday Morning. · If you would be willing to host a family for Thanksgiving day, please let me know. We want everyone to have an opportunity to share with others on this day of blessings and thanks. To prepare your hearts for what we'll be unpacking this week, I want to encourage you to read Matthew 4:1-11. Here’s what’s coming up... · Don’t forget to unite with me in prayer tonight @ 6pm as we cover myself, our staff and our church in prayer during our series on spiritual warfare. So, set aside a few minutes wherever you may be to pray for God’s protection and our growth in Jesus. · Tonight, November 2nd, we are sponsoring a great event for all of our moms but especially for our single moms. It's called, "The Life and Times of Five Single Moms". This will be put on by the "Single Moms Thrive Ministry" that we partner with. Come and hear the stories of 5 incredible women, ranging in age from 70 - 90, as they share about how they raised their kids. Discover how they persevered and the glue that held the family together. We’re starting a new series called, “This Means War...The Reality of Spiritual Warfare”. And I know that for a lot of believers…this topic of spiritual warfare is uncharted territory, but it is territory that needs to be discovered. I want you to know that through this series, I want to help us understand that there’s a war going on inside each and every one of us…a spiritual battle that’s being played out every day of our lives and if you don’t believe me, all you have to do is look around and you will see the results. But also, I want to help us to understand that this battle we’re in, is fought from the inside out through the power of the Holy Spirit and our victory has already been won on the cross of Jesus.
