Learning Along the Journey

* Learning to manage time – Debby starts the day at 7:00 a.m. and sees clients until 12:30 p.m. Then she exercises/engages in self-care/goes to appointments for herself/does online teaching in the afternoons. This gives her a chance to rejuvenate. In addition to the clients that Debby sees during the day, she sees clients two nights a week.

* Learning to develop successful habits – An important habit for Debby is “putting herself out there” in the local community. This is more important now than when she was engaged in solo practice because she recently established a new business with a new name and needs to get the word out to facilitate referrals.

* Learning how to care for yourself – When Debby feels tired or doesn’t feel like doing something she knows that she needs to take care of herself. She does palates and ball room dancing twice a week and gets massages on a regular basis. Self-care is important because if you don’t take care of yourself as a therapist then you won’t be able to care for others.

* Learning about private practice and personal relationships – Debby’s partner has helped her with the “old school” form of marketing her practice (e.g., handing out flyers) while her partner’s daughter and her husband have helped out with social media. Debby and her partner have not really experienced any challenges since she has started her new venture and they make sure and do fun things with one another on the weekends.

* Learning to develop a private practice mindset/identity – Debby’s identity as a private practitioner has shifted since she has transitioned from solo to group private practice. She truly feels like a business owner now as there are other people who work in her practice for whom she’s responsible. She is representing an organization and not just herself.
