An architectural drafter typically earns an associate of applied science in drafting or related degree from a technical school or community college. They usually learn about the basics of design, sketching, and computer-aided design (CAD) software. An associate's degree typically requires two years of full-time study. A certificate program may take less time but will teach the same skills as an associate's degree. A drafter may specialize in architectural, civil, or mechanical drafting.

Generally, employers require that you have a minimum of a high school diploma or an associate's degree in engineering graphics.
