Men suffering from metastatic prostate cancer in Australia may soon see their treatment options limited if a lawsuit launched by pharmaceutical company Novartis succeeds. The Swiss company has taken Australia's biggest cancer care provider GenesisCare to the Federal Court. The lawsuit alleges the treatment known as Lutetium PSMA I&T infringes on the company's patent for a similar product known as Pluvicto, placing the future use of the revolutionary treatment at risk. Guest: Professor Sze Ting Lee, Chair, the Australasian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists Theranostics Committee Producer: Grace Stranger GenesisCare statement: "GenesisCare continues to offer theranostics treatment to patients, including clinical trials and treatment using the TGA approved Lutetium-177 PSMA product, where appropriate. It has, however, suspended prescribing Lutetium-177 PSMA I&T to new patients under the TGA Special Access Scheme. Due to the ongoing nature of legal proceedings, GenesisCare is otherwise unable to comment on the matter." Novartis statement: "Novartis believes that radioligand therapies, like other medicines and therapeutics, should be evaluated by the TGA for safety and efficacy before being made available to patients through broad national reimbursement. Moving away from this process, established to ensure the safety and efficacy of medicines provided to Australians, creates a concerning precedent which could impact on future patient access to innovative cancer medicines. Pluvicto® (Lutetium (177Lu) vipivotide tetraxetan) is the only registered radioligand therapy (RLT) in Australia reviewed by the TGA for safety and efficacy. We recognise the importance of creating a long-term sustainable environment for RLTs in the future. Novartis is committed to working with Government and the healthcare ecosystem to bring our full pipeline of RLTs to Australian patients. "…
