Marcia Clark, best known as the lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial, has become a trailblazer for women in law and beyond. Her journey from courtroom to bestselling author reflects her resilience and determination to redefine herself amidst intense public scrutiny. On this episode of Worth Knowing, Clark dives into her latest book, *Trial by Ambush*, which examines the 1953 Barbara Graham caseāa story that highlights gender bias, media sensationalism, and the notion that all cases are subject to societal, cultural, and political winds. Clark shares how her experiences during the Simpson trial shaped her perspective on societal pressures and the role of women in high-stakes professions. Her reflections on how media, forensic science, and legal practices have evolved over decades offer valuable insights into the intersection of law and culture. This conversation is a compelling exploration of true crime, personal growth, and how Clarkās groundbreaking career continues to inspire a new generation of women to challenge norms and forge their own paths. Marcia Clark is a bestselling author and a criminal lawyer who began her career in law as a criminal defense attorney and went on to become a prosecutor in the L.A. District Attorney's Office in 1981. She spent ten years in the Special Trials Unit, where she handled a number of high-profile cases, including the prosecution of stalker/murderer Robert Bardo, whose conviction for the murder of actress Rebecca Schaeffer resulted in legislation that offered victims better protection from stalkers as well as increased punishment for the offenders. She was lead prosecutor for the O.J. Simpson murder trial. In May of 1997 her book on the Simpson case, "Without a Doubt," was published and reached #1 on the New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Publishers Weekly bestsellers lists. In February 2016, Clark re-released the book with a new foreword. Arts correspondent Margo Hammondās guest today is Mary Corbett, a violinist for the Florida Orchestra since 1989. This week Corbett was a guest speaker at the Tampa Bay chapter of Creative Mornings, a free monthly breakfast lecture series for creatives that now hosts events in 247 cities all over the world, both in person and online. This month's theme for speakers was Revival. Corbett has a unique story to tell ā not so much of revival as survival. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, she got her start on the violin at the age of eight, growing up in Buffalo, New York as the only Black girl in her neighborhood, her school and her music program. She says it was challenging to not be able to see anyone who looked like her in the orchestra ā and in the audience. She joined the Florida Orchestra in 1989 and although the FSO has featured other African Americans in its performances, today Corbett is the only American American player in its ranks. In this interview Corbett descri bes her musical journey which has included a two-year stint with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein and an appearance with Whitney Houston for her iconic Super Bowl performance of the National Anthem. She also makes a case that the story of classical music itself is not so much a story of revival either as it is one of constant renewal. Think, she says, of the transformation of a 1939 musical ā The Wizard of Oz ā into Wicked. Even music hundreds of years old can be made relevant today. #arts #music #creativemornings #margohammond #maryecorbett #violinist #thefloridaorchestra #africanamericanmusician #classicalmusic #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpeteā¦
St. Pete Eats welcomes Kelli Casto of St. Pete's newest fresh produce store, Your Neighborhood Produce, in an area of St. Petersburg with limited access to fresh produce. Your Neighborhood Produce recently opened at 132 49th St. S. in the South St. Pete Community Redevelopment Area. The market is an extension of Kelli Castoās mission to ensure neighbors can access fresh fruits and vegetables. The store operates under the Saving our Seniors umbrella, a non-profit Castro founded to provide discounted medical equipment. She launched Produce PAC (People Assisting Community), a delivery service, in March 2024 and now has a storefront that welcomes customers who rely on food assistance programs to mitigate soaring grocery bills. āI think bringing this into a community that is often overlooked and undervalued by our society will allow them to feel appreciated,ā Casto said. āI want to break the standard that eating healthy is too expensive and people canāt afford it.ā Casto called the area around South St. Peteās Childs Park neighborhood a nutritional food desert. Your Neighborhood Produce offers about 40 fresh fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, corn, cauliflower, collard greens, lemons, limes, oranges and pineapples. Casto is now a certified SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) retailer. Feeding Florida provides a dollar-for-dollar match for benefits spent on eligible produce at participating markets. John Bannon, who has been principal tympani with The Florida Orchestra for nearly 40 years, downplays his considerable talents in this playful Arts Alive! interview. āFirst you tune it, and then you hit it. Preferably in that order.ā What becomes clear is that the tympani is an integral part of not just the percussion section but of the full orchestra itself, and that Bannonās talents as both an interpreter and a creative driver have made the TFO experience richer by degrees, leaps and considerable bounds. He first plied his percussive trade locally in the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony, a precursor to The Florida Orchestra. Joining Bannon in the podcast studio is John Shaw, the orchestraās principal percussionist, who adds insight and color to the conversation about the role of percussion ā and drums in particular ā in symphonic music. Shaw is also present to say nice things about Bannon, whom heās played alongside since the 1990s. Following this weekendās performances of Mahlerās Symphony No. 3, Bannon is retiring from TFO. Bannonās percussionist son, Kelsey, will play second tympani at these concerts (Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Mahaffey Theater). It is the orchestraās final Masterworks program of the season. The veteran tympanist might be slowing down, but no way is he hanging out the āGone Fishināā sign. He is in demand as both an educator (at St. Pete College and Hillsborough Community College, as well as an every-summer gig coaching chamber music and teaching percussion at a music school in Vermont) and a guest conductor. āI intend to remain active,ā he says. āPeople say āWhat are you going to do when you retire?ā My answer is āLess.āā #TFO #floridaorchestra #billdeyoung #stpetecatalyst #tampabay #radio #radiostpete Email Share Tweet Share Related Topics: Arts Alive cmedia John Bannon John Shaw Mahler percission Podcast St. Petersburg Tampa Bay The Florida Orchestra tympani Click to comment Subscribe to the Daily Spark Get the latest right to your phoneā¦
