Enclothed cognition is a term used to describe the psychological effects that clothing has on the wearer. It suggests that what we wear can have a significant impact on our self-image, emotions, and performance. This theory was developed by Adam Hajo and Adam D. Galinsky in 2012 in their study “Enclothed Cognition.”

The concept of enclothed cognition states that the symbolic meaning of what we wear can affect our psychological processes, such as self-esteem and confidence. This means that when someone puts on a piece of clothing, they may feel empowered or successful due to its connotations. Furthermore, research has shown that clothes which are associated with higher social status can increase feelings of power and motivation.

The concept of enclothed cognition has been used in a number of studies to examine how clothing affects performance. For example, researchers have looked at the effect that uniforms may have on students' academic performance and found that wearing a uniform had a positive influence on achievement. Similarly, another study found that wearing formal business attire had a positive effect on people's negotiation skills.

These findings suggest that clothing can have a powerful psychological impact, as well as an aesthetic one. Wearing clothes which you feel comfortable and confident in can help to improve your self-esteem, performance, and overall wellbeing. So don't forget to dress for success! Not only can your clothing help you to look the part, but it can also make a difference in how you feel and perform.

I use the science behind enclothe congition in my style coaching practice on various aspects as we design their life and style for their next level of success.
