Tracy Markle and Dr. Brett Kennedy are the fore of developing best practices for the treatment of digital media overuse issues. And to have them contribute the some of the insidious ways persuasive design is used to keep us engaged is a huge win for this podcast. The reason we, as people in recovery, want to know about this is because many businesses have perfected persuasive design to a degree that, when we are faced with it we don’t even question it. We don’t know that we are being persuaded. We don’t realize that we are accepting information as a matter of fact, without scrutiny. These are the goals of persuasive design, and we have seen them before. In order to recover ourselves, it is very important to get a wide perspective of how businesses are getting people to engage in addictive activities.

There are people we all know who are in active addiction and yet judge us. Why? Because their addiction isn’t heroin, meth, or something society wants to demonize. They throw away their lives little by little because of things our consumer society wants from them. As long as tech, work, sex, and other perceived “healthy” activities are supported in our culture, then addictions in those areas are going to go unchecked and those people are going to continue to contribute to their own lack of deep fulfillment.

As my work suggests I am always looking to recover myself completely and my aim is to help others recover themselves. I see a client for a total of 4 sessions which is designed to launch self-directed lives and separate us from the constant draw of codependency. This starts with my doing a portrait of my client. The portrait is an intimate experience, these open a vocabulary to trauma and are healing. This process is not for everyone and if you are not ready I will not work with you.
