Don’t We ALL Face Them?

And If I Only Could
Of course we do! They are a part of life. Nobody has ever enjoyed a life free of problems, and even if they did, would a problem-free life really be that enjoyable? Problems, as much as we may sometimes dread them, provide us a sense of purpose, and solving problems can give us a sense of deep accomplishment.

So Why is the Word a Problem?

Have you ever been to a motivational seminar where the speaker discourages the use of the word problem? Many best-selling motivational gurEverything But Whyus tell us to avoid that word and label our problems as challenges instead. Does merely changing the word change the situation though, or is it (in the words of one of my favorite authors Gary Coxe), merely putting spray paint on rust?

Spray Paint on Rust?

I have heard certain motivational gurus say that our problems are really “challenges”, and that if we switch the terminology, they will appear easier to overcome. But does simply changing the wording make a pRustOleum Spray Paint, 12/2014 by Mike Mozart of TheToyChannel and JeepersMedia on YouTube #Rust #Oleum #Spray #Paintroblem less problematic, or are we simply spraying paint over a rust spot without solving the underlying problem of removing the rust in the first place? Does branding a problem a challenge change the fact that we are faced with a situation in need of a solution?

Do Problems Give Us a Purpose?

This week on the big shoe, I focus on how problems are actually more of a help than a hindrance, and how they serve important roles in our personal growth and life’s journey. A problem requires a solution, and it is in #3 Motivational Poster. (I'm joking again!)identifying and implementing solutions that we derive those feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction. Whether we realize it or not, we humans are in the problem solving business. Our problems drive us to succeed, grow and enhance our lives, so why does the word get such a bad rap?

Is PROBLEM Just a Negative Buzzword?

It would seem so when used in certain (mostly personal) contexts:

  • Do you have a problem?
  • This guy is a real problem!
  • I have a big problem with you!
  • Really, what’s your problem?

It’s easy to see how the word problem gets a bad rap in society, but does it mean that all problems are inherently bad, or are they simply situations that require attention and action to solve? Is it the problem itself that is bad, or is it the way we look at a problematic situation that makes it so?

Are YOU a Problem Solver?

What problems do you face on a daily basis, and what solutions do implement? I’ll go out on a limb here and say that if you own a business or have a job, you’re a problem solver. ProfCERDEC Math and Science Summer Camp, 2013essional life, after all, is about providing solutions. Personal life is also about problem-solving, whether it’s marriage, relationship, family or just deciding which ketchup to buy. Life is a series of problems and a series of solutions. What are yours?

Join the conversation – I look forward to your input.

Have a Blessed Day!
