What’s the secret to lasting friendships? How does queer community show up through the ebbs and flows of life? And what’s the REAL story behind the “YMCA” song? In the first episode of Silver Linings, The Old Gays dive into an essential part of queer life: chosen family. They discuss the vital love, support, and sense of belonging that community provides, especially during life's toughest moments. They open up about what “queer” means to them, how chosen family has impacted their lives, and how to maintain close bonds over time–including their love for each other! “We’ve come a long way, baby.” Family isn’t just what you’re born with; it’s the people who show up, shape you, and stick around. We have all broken promises, and have been wronged by others breaking trust with us. Broken trust leaves us uncertain, robbed of joy, and fearful. In Joshua chapter 5, Israel is dealing with these same emotions, this same fight for trust. Their parents’ generation had sinned, and now they were afraid that they had out-sinned God’s patience, and His faithfulness to His promises to them. Will He take His promises back, or can He still be trusted in spite of Israel’s disobedience? The good news is, He can; God’s grace and His promises never wear thin, and there is great hope for us in this. In this episode, Pastor Jordan explores this theme in Joshua 5.

We are prone to forget. We build monuments to remember wars, people and events important to our culture and history, and even to remember ideas and beliefs. Think of the monuments we build to commemorate the concept of liberty, and to remind us not to forget, and to not lose love for such an idea. We are even more prone to forget God, and all the benefits of obeying Him, and living life close to Him. When we forget God, our hearts make idols for us to worship with our affections, our time, and our resources. Pastor Jordan will show us here that forgetfulness is the enemy of faith, and in Joshua chapter 4 we see God lead Israel through their plight of forgetfulness, which is much like ours today.
