This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Founded in 1908, the Utah Bankers Association represents Utah's banking sector. They advocate for their members and offer resources to help banks deliver exceptional services. President and CEO, Howard Headlee, joins us with more. Howard Headlee: Utah is the 5th largest banking state in the country, with over a trillion dollars in assets in state headquartered banks – a stat that may surprise you. Financial services is the largest sector of our state’s economy, driving growth, innovation, and prosperity. Utah’s strong and fair regulatory environment makes this a prime destination for financial institutions, fostering competition, innovation, and economic expansion. Banks do more than hold your money – they fuel economic opportunity, strengthen communities, and improve lives. Yes, your money’s always available when you need it, but in the meantime your banker invests in the community through loans to small businesses, homeownership, and affordable housing. At the end of the day, banks are only as strong as the communities they serve – when Utah thrives, our banks thrive. Our fates are connected, and that’s why the Utah Bankers Association will continue working to ensure a strong and vibrant banking industry in our state. Derek Miller: The Utah Bankers Association is making a real impact in the community through their services and events, promoting financial education and supporting local businesses. Check out what they offer at Utah.bank. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: 3/21/25…

This is Derek Miller of the Salt Lake Chamber with your Utah Business Report. Salt Lake City’s Westside neighborhoods are separated from eastern parts of the city, including downtown, by I-15 and several major railroad tracks. These barriers present a daily challenge for people who need to cross to the east side. To address this, Salt Lake City is launching a transportation study, funded by the US Department of Transportation’s Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program. The study will create a plan that analyzes needs, and recommends and prioritizes potential solutions to improve transportation infrastructure and address the west-east divide. The SLC West-East Connections Study team will collaborate with community members, empowering the people most affected by the division to help define the nature of the problem and develop and prioritize solutions that address their needs. Three Intermountain Health hospitals recently ranked among the Top 50 heart hospitals in the nation for 2025, according to a new national study of heart hospitals in America by Premier Inc. Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, and Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital, all made the list due to their quality of care, outcomes, and patient experience, among other criteria. According to the study, if hospitals around the country had similar marks to those making the Top 50 list, it could mean 14,000 fewer deaths, 28,600 fewer bypass and angioplasty patients suffering complications, and save more than 1.5 billion dollars for inpatient costs in 2025. This prepares graduates for successful healthcare careers in Utah and beyond. Dean of the college, Dr. Yasmen Simonian, joins us with more. Yas Simonian: Weber State graduates are at the leading edge of healthcare in Utah. They are filling important positions, engaging with communities and, most of all, providing quality patient care. Weber State produces more healthcare professionals than any other college in Utah. We are constantly tracking workforce demands to make sure we keep our graduates at the cutting edge. Recently, we graduated our first class of physician assistants, and we just launched a new psychiatric mental health emphasis in our Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Both of these address shortages and help increase access to care. We’re also long-time partners with over 1,200 hospitals and clinical sites, where students learn hands on and enhance their skills. Every semester, hundreds of graduates from the College of Health Professions step into brilliant careers. You can, too, visit weberstate.edu/health-professions. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Since 1973, VCBO Architecture has grown to become one of the top design firms in the western United States. Committed to community-driven design, the VCBO team thrives on projects with an impact. Principal architect Brent Tippets joins us with more. Brent Tippets: VCBO’s mission is to create spaces for people to thrive. From Salt Lake City’s iconic library to the new Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi, our work celebrates the communities we serve. Nothing demonstrates this more than the Marshall N. White Community Center in Ogden. Originally built in 1968, this beloved center honors Marshall White, a veteran, mentor, civil rights leader, and police officer killed in the line of duty. Over the past 50 years, the center has served a historically Black and Latino neighborhood, becoming a cherished gathering place engrained in the public memory. Guided by community input, we worked with Ogden City to design a replacement twice the size of the original, revitalized with amenities for recreation and community programs. Opening in 2025, the new center will preserve its legacy as a vibrant hub of connection and opportunity — a reflection of Ogden’s values. This is what VCBO is about — creating community spaces beloved by the people we serve. Derek Miller: With offices in Salt Lake and St. George, VCBO Architecture’s designs are inspired by the people and places they serve and ultimately bring communities together. Learn more at VCBO.com.
