"The basic premise of the event is that hunters hunt rattlesnakes from the surrounding environment all across West Texas, and bring them into the roundup for the weekend. And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. Yet beneath the pageantry and excitement lies a deeper question: Is our fascination with these spectacles worth the toll it takes on the animals involved? With compassion and insight, Elizabeth invites readers to consider whether there’s a more ethical and empathetic way to honor our stories — one that respects both animals and the traditions they inspire. Please listen, share and read, Forget the Camel. It will be released on April 8th, 2025. https://apollopublishers.com/index.php/forget-the-camel/…

Keywords luxury items, healthcare, psychotherapy, insurance, therapy quality, evidence-based practices, mental health, disparities, consumer rights, therapy approaches Summary In this conversation, Jeremy explores the complex relationship between luxury spending and healthcare, particularly focusing on psychotherapy. He discusses the disparities in therapy quality that insurance can create, emphasizing that while some individuals receive effective treatment, others may not, leading to an uneven playing field. Jeremy advocates for the importance of evidence-based practices in therapy to ensure that clients receive the best possible care, and he raises philosophical questions about the value of therapy and its accessibility. Takeaways People prefer to pay for luxury items but not for healthcare. Healthcare should be equally distributed, but therapy complicates this. Different therapists use various approaches for the same condition. Insurance pays for psychotherapy, but quality varies significantly. Some clients receive poor therapy while others get effective treatment. Therapists should specialize rather than be generalists. Evidence-based practices are crucial in therapy. Disparities in treatment can lead to unfair advantages. Most people are unaware of the quality differences in therapy. The conversation about whether therapy should be free is important. Sound Bites "People want to pay for advantage." "It's unfair to the consumer." "Should therapy be free?" Chapters 00:00 Introduction to the Value of Therapy 00:50 The Disparity in Psychotherapy Quality 04:37 The Importance of Evidence-Based Practices 07:55 The Need for Systemic Change in Therapy The Big Idea: Healthcare tends to be something people don't like paying for. We view it as a necessity rather than a luxury, so it often feels unfair when a bill arrives for something that “should” be free. In contrast, consider how willingly most of us pay for cars, designer clothes, premium technology—all the things that give us some sort of advantage or pleasure in life. But what if therapy, despite being tucked under the umbrella of “healthcare,” actually confers a massive advantage like other luxury services do?…
Summary: In this episode of the Sanity and Society podcast, host Jeremy speaks with Valerie Vallador, a PhD student in clinical psychology. You may know Valerie better as @phdwithvalerie on instagram, where she documents the journey through a doctoral program in psychology, including study habits, her research projects, how to avoid burnout, tips for writing a dissertation, and maintaining sanity with a challenging schedule. We discuss Valerie's entry into psychology, her research on body image and family dynamics, and the challenges of graduate school. Valerie shares insights on the importance of mentorship, the differences between therapy and casual conversations, and the significance of self-care. They also explore generational differences in mental health perspectives, the need for business training in psychology programs, and the practical applications of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Valerie emphasizes the importance of understanding the theoretical underpinnings of treatments and shares her plans for future social media content about mental health. Takeaways The connection between body and mind is crucial in mental health. Executive dysfunction can significantly impact children's lives. Graduate school can be overwhelming and lacks advocacy for students. Having a supportive advisor is essential for success in a PhD program. Therapy involves analysis and reflection, not just venting. ACT and DBT are effective therapies for managing anxiety and depression. Social media can help build community among graduate students. Self-care practices are vital for maintaining mental health during a PhD. Understanding the biopsychosocial model is important for mental health professionals. Sound Bites "There's so much more to the psychology profession." "I really believe in the strength of mindfulness." "Your advisor can make or break you." Jason Snyder, PhD is an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University (ASU), serving in the Department of Sustainable Development. He is a man for all seasons, just as comfortable discussing mindfulness, self-inquiry, and the finer points of eastern philosophy as he is addressing "fractal localism" and "permaculture." This is who you want in a "Walking Dead" Scenario, in which sustainable agriculture AND philosophy are both required. Jason's expertise at proposing and fashioning sustainable agricultural ecosystems (with a view toward economic sustainability) serves as a welcome and timely topic, in the latter portion of this interview. The first hour of this podcast contrasts Jason's psychological and philosophical background with my own, with a deep yet conversational dive into applied philosophy and psychology. I speak with Jason regarding the "both/and" stance of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as this relates to his own personal journey as a "cartographer of ideas," who practices curious listening toward dissonant ideas. "Both/AND" is even the name of a podcast which he hosts with Jared Janes. Special attention is dedicated to the overlap between psychology (especially Robert Keegan's Theory of Adult Development) and spiritual experiences, with relevance to daily functioning. Our dialogue regarding the interactive relationship between neurobiology (limbic system, frontal lobe, etc.) and personality growth/pathlogy is especially notable. Jason's fondness for 🔥psychological development theory, 🔥metamodernity 🔥and curiosity regarding the predisposition for human beings to compartmentalize themselves into "memetic tribes" All form a bridge between the "Both/AND" podcast and the Fox Den. You'll also want to hear our conversation regarding Jason's article, Decentralizing Cognition: Integrating Mindfulness and Self-Inquiry. Our interview concludes with a focus upon Jason's passion for combining economic and environmental sustainability. ▶Find Jason via ✅Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/both-and/id1451020286 ✅Twitter: https://twitter.com/cognazor ✅Article on The Side View: https://thesideview.co/articles/decentralizing-cognition/…

Imagine a traveler, exiting the bustling and claustrophobic mire of a cityscape, journeying into nature, accompanied by a telepathic fox companion. The two communicate earnestly about the exponential acceleration of mindless consumption and the very commodification of identity. We first address his poignant essay "Exiting Modernity," a rallying cry for a life of reflection: https://www.meta-nomad.net/exiting-modernity/ Eavesdrop on our conversation about the decline of mindful connection, and what it means to be a Neo-Ascetic.
