The Deaf community is at a unique intersection of linguistic minority and disability access. This is particularly complex and dangerous when considering Deaf inmates in the carceral system.

talila_lewis_2Talila A. Lewis is an activist-attorney who engineers social justice through education, accountable activism, & by facilitating collective leadership and action. White House Champion of Change and Pacific Standard top 30 under 30″ thinker, Talila founded & directs Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf (HEARD), is a visiting professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, and the 2016 Givelber Public Interest Lecturer at Northeastern University School of Law.

945093_594320900613418_512975913_n (1)Talila has been working tirelessly to advocate for the rights of Deaf inmates – including equipping prisons with videophones – and overturning wrongful convictions through the volunteer efforts of HEARD. For the June 8, 2016 episode of Intersections Radio, we talked about the experiences of Deaf people in prison settings and the Twitter chats HEARD has hosted on #DeafEd and #DeafinPrison.
