Better Call Saul – S3E2 – Witness

The third season of Better Call Saul is off and running, with one major plotline simmering and another leaping forward. The slow burn of Mike’s story continues apace, with one major reveal—the appearance of Los Pollos Hermanos—that is satisfying without having been altogether unexpected. Likewise, when Mike enlists Jimmy to gather information from within the restaurant, we are hardly surprised to see Gus, even if the promise of what he might bring to this phase of the narrative is tantalizing.

The episode’s most explosive scene comes at the end, when Jimmy’s rage at being dismissed and perhaps actively disliked by his brother finds a focal point: The fact that Chuck secretly taped the conversation wherein Jimmy revealed in no uncertain terms what he did with the Mesa Verde documents. Jimmy hears about the tape from Kim, who heard it from Ernesto, and at first hides his anger. But at the end of the afternoon, exhausted from a long day’s legal work, he snaps, threatening Chuck and destroying his property in full view of Howard Hamlin and a P.I. that Chuck has hired.

The orchestrated nature of this moment reveals beyond a doubt the multiple levels of Chuck’s malevolent deception. We are left hanging at a moment when Jimmy has inarguably incriminated himself, giving Chuck more legal ammo than just the possibly inadmissible (and now presumably destroyed) cassette.

The episode also adds one important character to the Saul Goodman pantheon: A fresh-faced Francesca, who remains Jimmy’s beleaguered secretary in the Breaking Bad years, despite a steady stream of seemingly unwanted sexual advances from her increasingly sleazy boss.
