In this episode we're speaking to Shannon, Marine Corps veteran, single mother, supporter of the clothing line Call Me Mommy, and founder of The Happy Bean Project. The Happy Bean Project takes a simple concept of connecting though coffee and furthers that connection into pairing people living on the street and people suffering with mental health issues to resources that are already available. Their, team of volunteers go to homeless shelters, mental health facilities and the streets to serve coffee food, clothing and hygiene donations. Through coffee they are able to show those in need that people care about them, giving them hope and a person to talk to while sipping coffee. The goal is to save lives, to help prevent suicide, and to get people talking about mental health through coffee.
As someone who deals with mental health herself, Shannon knows all to well the dangers of falling through the cracks of the system. Not having someone to understand or listen when you're having a bad day is a dangerous combination. We talk about the how the system is not designed to help people with mental health issues, and in some cases makes the situation worse.
We discussed the mental health stigma that comes from being in the military and how it is so very important to make sure the mental health is taken care of just as much as the physical health. Being in the military is just as emotionally/mentally taxing as it is physically taxing, yet there isn't anything to help service men and women deal with the hardships before, during, and after their time in the military. Shannon talks about how important it is to see a mental health professional while in the military so that soldiers begin to understand their own mind.
This episode is a great dive into the depths of mental health, the stigma society places on it, and what we can do for ourselves and others to help make the world better. Please stop by the Happy Bean Project website for more information on how to help a great cause.
