1968 - Huntington Beach, California.

Anita Piteau dreamed of getting out of Augusta, Maine. As a teenager, she’d been committed to the Maine Industrial School for Girls: a reform school that aimed to turn rebellious, troubled, and misfit girls into promising young women.

When she left the school, Anita was far from reformed. If anything, she was more determined than ever to live her life on her own terms. In December of 1967, Anita packed up and went to California in search of adventure.

But a few months later, her family suddenly stopped hearing from her, and nobody could get in touch. Anita was a free spirit, but she’d never just cut off her family like this.

Did something terrible happen to Anita Piteau? Or was she just caught up in her newfound freedom and life in a new city?
