One thing most of the women I coach have in common is living under the tyranny of “shoulds” and “oughts.” A should can be innocuous, but it can also be horribly destructive. Point is, living by the “shoulds” is choosing to live on someone else’s terms.

The thing about menopause is that through the major physiological and psychological change, things that have been suppressed must be addressed. Deal with them, or they will deal with you, typically with a mental or physical health issue.

Choosing your “must” is the greatest thing you can do for yourself. If you want to know your “must,” get to know your “shoulds.”

When a “should” comes up for you that’s tied to some sort of resentment or frustration, ask yourself:

  1. Where did it come from?
  2. Is this really true for you?
  3. Do you want to keep holding on to it? Be honest!

I have a couple announcements too! I’m starting The Midlife Remix Book Club on October 7th, starting, appropriately, with “The Crossroads of Should and Must” by Elle Luna. I revisit this one frequently and I’m sure you’ll love it.
