Minnesota has one of the best education systems in the country unless you are a black boy. Black male teachers are only 0.5% of the teaching population in Minnesota and just 2% nationally. Studies show that if black boys have at least one Black male teacher during their elementary school years they are 29% less likely to drop out of school years later (this number was 39% for very low-income Black students). Markus Flynn, Executive Director of Black Men Teach will discuss the disparities and their impact and his initiative to recruit, prepare, place and retain Black male teachers in elementary schools.
