Welcome to Episode 1979 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim heads to the the Piedmont region of northern Italy where she meets Anna & Valentina Abbona of Marchesi di Barolo

Discover the history of the ancient estate where the winery is located, the development of this extraordinary family winery, and the winemaking techniques involved in producing its famous Barolo wines.

More about the winery:

The Marchesi di Barolo Estate encompasses approximately 100 acres of vineyards in the Langhe, some of the finest in Piedmont. The cellars are located in the village of Barolo. Marchesi di Barolo was the first to vinify Nebbiolo grapes in a dry style – Barolo, as we know it today was born in their cellars. It is this vision, combined with a natural synthesis of climate, culture and care that gives each bottle of Marchesi di Barolo its extraordinary and uniquely endowed characteristics. The early Falletti dynasty established vineyards throughout their land, which were acquired in the late 19th century by Pietro Abbona, the undisputed patriarch of Barolo! Since that time, Marchesi di Barolo has sustained a vibrant history of Innovation and success.

Since 2006, the estate has been under the direction of the family of Ernesto and Anna Abbona.

Today Marchesi di Barolo remains a family business.
