I'm pressing on the upward way, new heights I am gaining every day.
That's an old song of the church referring to the Christian who is progressing in their developing relationship with their Father.
However, when we use the word "pressing," many would equate that to energy, busywork struggle to go forward.
In reality, to press into God simply means leaning into him like the apostle John did and putting his head on His chest. The scriptures tell us to seek the Lord while He may be found. If we're not careful, that could make us think that He's hiding or doesn't want to be found, so we become nervous and full of anxiety.
I believe that the word press could be exchanged for the word rest. The apostle Paul talks a lot about resting and trusting that what God has done for you will be complete in you.
As a young man in the ministry, I pressed into the Lord, yet much of the time, I had a nervous frustration or anxiety, wondering if God was ever going to come through for me. Oh yes, I had faith in praying for the sick and seeing them healed. And I had faith that men and women would come to Jesus when I preached. And they did.
However, the underlying struggle would have been, am I ever going to reach that place that I desire and believe God has called me to. There were too many years of anxiety that I suffered unnecessarily. Why?
Because my God, my Father is in charge of my advancement.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart lean not unto your own understanding in all of your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy path."
