Pen's first year check up looms but a return to the breast clinic is the last place she wants to be. "However warm and caring and gentle the staff, there’s no getting round the fact that the breast clinic is not about good news, even the good news I did get there was set against the context of the fact that it could have been much, much worse news. Learning something isn’t as bad as it could have been doesn’t make it good, it just makes it a bit less bad. Being braced for terrible news leaves a residue, the walls of the hospital clinic are sticky with it..."…
Pen starts to find strength through her fellow breast cancer warriors, leaning in to their common experience and challenges... "I’m not sure the collective noun for breast cancer survivors but there’s so very many of us I’m tempted to coin one. A ‘bruise’ of survivors perhaps, because we all are, bruised, we’re black and blue with it, even a year on hardly any of us are fading to green and yellow." Pen keeps being asked if she's 'back to normal' and the question bugs her... "This week I’ve been snagged by the word ‘normal’, kind of a dull, grey, word at best. Normal doesn’t sound like she’d stay out all night, doing drugs and shagging random strangers, no, Normal sounds more of a nice cup of tea and a biscuit (probably a custard cream) kinda girl. Normal is a bit more Norma Jean than Marilyn." For loads of people, the first anniversary of their diagnosis is significant and Pen's no different but in considering how she feels about the looming 'cancerversary' she realises there are crumbs of comfort lurking in the shadows... "Of course I will always remember when I found out I had cancer, why would I forget, but I don’t need to do anything more than let myself acknowledge it and, if I do happen to allow myself to dip back into those indescribably painful weeks and months after my diagnosis, I need to make sure I don’t just see my personal struggles but also make room for the ongoing warmth, love, support and friendship that underpin all those moments we went through..." The great bra throwaway is looming but Pen's feeling reluctant... "maybe that turn of the year, spring clean thing, is kicking in. It suddenly feels pressing. But it’s a spikey, gnarly, tear stain of a decision. I’ve never been one for fancy, expensive underwear but maybe that means the few nice bras I do have carry more significance. I need to throw away my old bras because they don’t fit, they won’t ever fit again and the thought of an underwire, albeit encased in fabric, insistent, pushing and rubbing against the creased flesh beneath my reconstructed breast makes my teeth want to unseat themselves in horror. I’d go ten rounds with nails and a blackboard before I could go ten seconds with wires and bad boob..." "a shaken snow globe is exactly how a cancer diagnosis feels. Suddenly there you are, trapped inside your fragile bubble, desperately trying to remain upright while the soft petals of everything you ever took for granted and thought you knew, fly around your head. "As time stretches out between me and the shock of those early diagnosis days, I’m spending more and more time with cancer as a back note, a gentle hum to my day. I cook, I write, I read, I see friends, we laugh, alot. All of these things I do with a body that doesn’t work as well as it did and probably never will again. All of these things I do with a body which is significantly scarred and changed. It’s the physicality of cancer that will be my personal tinnitus. But I am living with it, I am not defined by it. I am not cancer. And that discovery feels like a small triumph." This was one of the hardest episodes for Pen to write and then read back. None of us likes to admit when we're being a bit of a dick but its only by being honest about ourselves, how we're feeling and perhaps our less appealing qualities, that we get to go to work on feeling a bit better. So here Pen wrestles with the notion that she's jealous, something she hates to admit. One of the hardest things about cancer is that it rips away the sense of having choice over your life, you lose control. In this episode Pen wrestles back control by choosing to take a walk up the hill above the house in search of understanding as to why she still feels so angry at cancer for stealing choice from her. Powerful, insightful and inspiring, writing which takes you way beyond the subject of cancer and ploughs into the human condition. A call from an old friend prompts Pen to mull over what we give of ourselves to others. Should she worry about how honest she's been in writing her blog (and by association in this podcast), should she be fearful of the message that being so brutally honest sends out? "We want to be known. And we do. But we want to carefully curate what is known about us. Look at facebook, twitter, in fact all social media and you get a distilled concentrate of how each and every participant wants to be known. Facebook doesn’t paint a portrait so much as provide a series of self-styled snapshots, group them together and you get an outline of a figure but the detail is often missing. I doubt I’m alone in diving into the profiles and newsfeeds of both relative strangers and long lost acquaintances to see how they want to be known..." After making her exit from 25 years at the BBC, Pen ruminates on what on earth she'll say if she's asked "what do you do?". Time to leave the BBC and push 25 years of her life to one side, but leaving a workplace during lockdown over zoom is distinctly weird... "It feels ever so slightly like attending my own wake. People say lovely, generous, heartfelt things which make me squirm with embarrassment. I’m deeply suspicious I tell them, people always say nice things after someone dies, always sing their praises, this has the distinct whiff of being buried alive, tomorrow you’ll be slagging me off something rotten I laugh at them, you’ll be having an o-bitch-uary! I talk too much, soak up as much time as possible in a bid to stop them saying how much I’ll be missed. Finally at the end of the third zoom meeting we say a last farewell and each person leaves the meeting one by one switching off their camera..." E-bike at the ready, Pen contemplates the significance of getting back in the saddle and the cycling alongside David once more. For some reason the associated fear and anxiety prompts memories of a terrifying moment from years earlier... "We flew down the hill in pairs, spreading out, a distance opening up between myself at the back and the front group where David was, I was further up the hill, laughing and shouting, not looking when it happened. The first I knew of David’s hitting the car was the realisation that everything had stopped up ahead, time seem to have frozen, then the shout from Simon, one of the other cyclists, to call an ambulance..." Like loads of other people facing the fallout from cancer, Pen has taken some radical decisions about her career, but as the time to leave the BBC draws closer, she contemplates all the years she's spent there, half her life, with mixed emotions... "even though I know this story is finished, there’s that curious thing that happens with a great book or adventure. Part of you wants to hurtle to the end and throw yourself at the empty space beyond, the other part of you wants to drag your feet, take time to savour all the best bits, delight in the pleasures the book has afforded you, put off thatinevitable moment when you turn the page and there’s nothing there, a blank sheet then maybe an acknowledgement or two. I’ve been experiencing both of these things. Both of these things laced over with fear, pure, undiluted, gulp down the bile, fear." Pen finds a new way of getting active again but she's torn up with the notion that she might be somehow cheating... "Tears pour down my face as David drives us to the shop. Pen's in a reflective mood, mulling over her response to cancer in her writing... "As human beings we’re better at expressing the difficult, chewy stuff perhaps, than we are at emoting about how great life is and how happy we are. But all those songs aren’t about love, they’re about lost love, they’re like a reverse print of the thing you should actually be looking at. Flip the heartache on its head and of course the root of it all is the amazing thing that love is. I feel the same way about writing about my cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. It’s all a reverse image." Pen discovers a good friend has been diagnosed with cancer and it flings her back to when she learned of her own diagnosis... "What did I want when I found out? Who did I turn to? What did I need in those first desperate days and weeks? So when he calls and stutters out his shock and fear and sheer disbelief at the path he’s being pushed down, I don’t tell him it will all be alright and I don’t say he’s strong enough to beat this, because who am I to know what he’s up against or what strength is required. Pen's daughter asks her one of the toughest of questions and the mental journey it takes us on is both profound and profoundly moving... "‘Where do you want to be scattered when you die?’ B asks out of the blue. It trips me up in more ways than one and I’m rendered speechless. I don’t know why I should be so surprised at the idea of B considering my death – after all there isn’t a day that passes without my testing the thought against the back of my teeth – and the parent in me feels duty bound to mine into why she’s asking the question, but I’m not sure I can go there without crying..." Romance is on the cards this ep when Pen suddenly becomes what David calls his 'FW', Future Wife. Pen turns into a veritable bridezilla and starts a whirlwind of planning, that bit's easy, the struggle comes when she has to find a suitable dress... "so one Thursday morning shortly after, we find ourselves in a land so utterly feminine and sparkly and girlie that I’m struck dumb. Never in my 50 years on the planet have I dropped into somewhere quite so completely and overwhelmingly alien. Mine is a world of jeans and fleeces, hoodies and lycra cycling bibs – lots of lycra cycling bibs. I can’t remember the last time I wore a pair of heels and find any occasion which requires me to dress up excruciating. Because I’ve got a strong and muscular body, solid, somehow when I’m dressed up I always have the slight suspicion I look like a bloke in drag but as I cast around at the rows of sequins and sparkles a small, tucked away part of me lets out a squeal of delight. The easing of lockdown brings a rush of visitors which finds Pen collapsed in a heap only days before the inevitable return to work but the transition from recovery to the real world isn't smooth... "Work. But not the work I was used to 6 months earlier before my operation. My return to work means I sit in the spare room and stare at an endless series of other people’s spare rooms in an endless sequence of zoom meetings, none of which seem to mean much to me. I feel utterly disconnected. Strategy meetings centring around pandemic health and safety regulations replace creativity. I feel slight panic at how little any of it means. I hadn’t expected to feel so removed. Floating between the spare room and the kettle then back to the spare room I wonder how I’ll ever feel enough energy to start making programmes again let alone managing my team members and supporting them through all this crap. This week Pen's ruminating on what to say when people keep on insisting on asking her how she is. "David’s niece came to visit the other week and instead of asking me how I was she told me how she’d passed David as she came up the track. They’d stopped and wound down their respective car windows, ‘how’s Pen?’ she’d asked, ‘hard to kill’ came David’s reply. It was perfect and I snatched at it like a long sought, odd-shaped jigsaw piece. If you reply ‘hard to kill’ each time someone asks how you are you provide them with just the right dose of dark humour, light touch and get out of jail free card..." "What are you most looking forward to?", the question stumps me. I pause midway through de-seeding a pepper, rooting around for an answer but every time I cast ahead into the future I draw a blank. Even trying to slot events and possibilities into my mental calendar makes me flinch and I’m puzzled by it. Later that evening, driving with David to a favourite fishing spot on the loch shore, I guiltily fess up. Tears pouring down my face I tell him I can’t cast ahead because I can’t get past the idea that I’m going to die soon... Pen realises she need to turn and face the future but how and what should it hold? Time to talk about what it's like to live with someone living with cancer. This episode, Pen chats to her good friend, the chef, food writer and brilliant baker, Kirsten 'KJ' Gilmour from KJ's Bothy Bakery in Grantown on Spey. Telling the LUMP story has made Pen reflect that so much of her focus, when she was diagnosed, was about her and how she felt about having cancer. But what about the people around her who had to watch from the sidelines, who's lives were also being impacted? How difficult is it when you don't have cancer but it still robs you of the things you love doing and the people you love doing it with? 6 year's ago KJ's husband, Al, was suddenly diagnosed with myeloma, overnight their entire life and relationship changed. In this ep Kirsten opens up about the ups and downs of being married to someone with life-limiting diagnosis.
