HGTV star (Good Bones) Karen Laine joins the podcast for a fun and wide-ranging conversation.

Karen describes her transition from being an attorney to starting Two Chicks and a Hammer and launching the show Good Bones with her daughter Mina. We also learn Karen’s views on managing risk in real estate investing and how to plan for surprises. Karen discusses her philosophy around money and finance including some helpful tips for younger investors. We also learn how her role has changed on Good Bones and her passion for landscaping.

Karen describes why she’s passionate Fountain Square and other iconic Indianapolis neighborhoods while expounding on ideas as to how Indiana could alleviate the negative impacts of gentrification while promoting development. We also learn the strategy behind focusing their real estate investments in a small area.

Also included are Karen’s passion for costumes, the concept of “costume opportunities” and her foray into standup comedy.

Mother/daughter home reno and flipping duo Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk star as cohosts in the HGTV series Good Bones. Daughter Mina, a real estate agent, and mom Karen, a former lawyer, own an Indianapolis-based home renovation business with a mission to revitalize their favorite neighborhoods one house at a time.

Who are the hosts?

Austin Crites, CFA: Austin is a past-president and current committee member of CFA Society Indianapolis. Professionally, he is the Chief Investment Officer at Aurora Financial Strategies where he manages US-focused, all-cap, style-agnostic equity strategies as the core of client portfolios. Austin is a 2008 graduate of Marian University in Indianapolis where he is now an adjunct professor in the Byrum School of Business.

Addison Perry: Addison is currently a Junior at Taylor University where she is double majoring in Accounting and Finance. She is also involved in the Women’s Lacrosse club, Taylor Student Organization Leadership Programing Cabinet, and is President of a club that she started, Investing Excellence. Addison is the Executive Assistant of CFA Society Indianapolis.

Ashley Merder: Ashley is a Brand Manager for a Tech company based in the Indianapolis area. She is the Executive Director and sits on the board of CFA Society Indianapolis. When she’s not working with clients or deep in the flow of design, she’s spending quality time with her husband and keeping up with their two little girls.

Matt Henry, CFA: Matt is a Senior Investment Officer at STAR Wealth Management. He is also a Past President and a director of CFA Society Indianapolis. When he’s not managing porfolios, Matt teaches Finance 300 at Ball State University. He enjoys air conditioning, wi-fi, and the conveniences of indoor living.
