Back in the fall, I bought an island with a house and a footbridge and soooo many more projects than I could have ever anticipated. Before I bought it, this property was my dream, but I did not know what I was in for with how much work this place needed.

Now, months later, I'm living here away from my family, in a building that’s under construction and with few amenities, working with a construction team cleaning, supervising – and sometimes running a jackhammer – to make it safe and livable. It’s been a lesson in patience, trust, discernment, and knowing myself among other things.

In this episode, I’m breaking down the whole experience for you: the loneliness, the growth, and all the ways in which I don’t think I’ll be able to go back to my life as it was before.

We want to hear from you! If you have feedback on this new series, please let us know. What questions do you have? What are you curious about? Send your thoughts or questions to meredythwillits@gmail.com.

What you’ll find in this episode:

Some background and history on the island property that I purchased

Just a few of the projects we’ve had to undertake on the property to make it safe for inhabitants

The hard lesson in trust (and when to be discerning) and why I’m staying on-site to oversee construction work now

How this experience is quieting me and stripping away my ego

How working with my hands on this property is an act of creation and how I’ve missed this creative work in my life

The intense loneliness I’ve felt at times as I’m isolated and away from my family

How living this simpler, stripped down life is making it more and more difficult to go back to suburbia
