For many of us, the means by which we learned to escape difficult emotions as a child follow us straight into adulthood. But as we mature, we can learn to recognize the behavior and call it out in ourselves. In this episode, Jacob is back to share how he has come to see his patterns of escape as an opportunity to pay attention to the check engine light on his soul.

What I love about this conversation is how well Jacob articulates how he learned to wrestle with the truth that God is all loving and at the same time face such unexplained hurt and pain. He shares how the transformation took root when he found a community that could help him exchange the secrets and darkness in his heart for freedom and unconditional love.

In this episode, you’ll learn

  • How Jacob’s pattern of escaping showed up in the early years of marriage
  • Why we believe we are entitled to permission to sin when we are in pain
  • How Jacob was able to reconcile the gifts and challenges of serving a God who created us with free will
  • The moment of vulnerability that God used to show Jacob that his love was not something Jacob could earn
  • The ways Jacob has been able to break cycles of shame as he raises his boys
