When our circumstances bring fear, chaos, and loneliness, the desire to want to escape makes sense. It’s our brain’s way of protecting us. But many times we learn to rely on those coping mechanisms early in our lives, having no awareness of how it could lead to so much emotional, spiritual, and even physical bondage.

In this episode, Jacob shares how having an absent father and a mother who struggled with addiction caused him to doubt how valuable he was. He talks about how lies about his worth took root and why video games became a form of respite from his overwhelming pain.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why Jacob’s parents were so emotionally unavailable
  • How he managed to survive when his mom would be gone for weeks at a time
  • Why Jacob had to remain hyper-vigilant in his home
  • The impact of the way culture and media shaped Jacob’s definition of normal
  • How we can naturally assume responsibility for the hurt done to us
