Today’s discussion is about decision-making and ensuring we make the right choices for our businesses. Our hosts, Dan Winter, and Amy Vodarek speak with Sheldon Bernard, a champion of applied decision sciences and founder of A440 Management, a consultancy dedicated to improving decision-making under uncertainty.

Sheldon discusses the role of bias in decision-making, including survivorship bias, why so many startups are failing just as they begin their journey, and what they should be doing differently to kick off in the right direction or pivot to a new opportunity.

He explores what constitutes a good decision-making process, and how to distinguish a low-quality decision with a good outcome (luck) from a high-quality decision. Sheldon addresses the most significant mistakes leaders and teams make around strategic decisions, how to overcome these through powerful framing, and the importance of our emotions and intuition in decision-making.

‘’The empirical data shows that if you think you're going to escape the impact of emotion and preference in a decision, you haven't been living. If you don't have tolerance for a bad outcome, you will not make a good decision. So, instead of trying to get under the table, let's get them out on the table, address them, and interrogate them.’’
