To me, he was Haz'a papa. I still remember the day I met him, either in 2017 or 2018. He welcomed me with his spirituality. Everything about him was different—the rocky area he lived in, an open-air theatre or gathering place made of rock formation, a pond, humble belongings—the list goes on. Thank you for all you have done during your time on Earth, Mr. Isadeen. You will be missed. Hello Frequency Listeners, Welcome to the final episode of 2024. As I sit here in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, a place of ancestral wisdom and deep familial heritages, I'm reminded of the interconnectedness of our journeys. This unexpected trip to support my mum has granted me a perspective that's both introspective and expansive. Reflecting on the episodes I've produced and co-produced since May of 2024, I am filled with immense gratitude. Each guest has not only enriched my podcast but also left a profound impact on my own journey. Your stories, insights, and shared wisdom have woven a metaphorical mat of knowledge and inspiration that I am profoundly thankful for. I am reminded of the profound connections we've explored through this podcast. From candid dialogues with individuals sharing their authentic stories to delving into the power of empathy, each episode has been a journey of discovery and growth. 2024 has been a year of many layers and reflections, particularly as it marks the second year since my dad's passing in this very house where I am recording this episode. It's been a period of processing, understanding, having empathy for myself and others, and healing. It has been both challenging and transformative. I am grateful for the creative muses, mentors, fellow travellers, comrades, partners, friends, and family who have been there, providing support and guidance. Your impact is infinite. As we near the end of the 2024 calendar year, I find myself in a moment of deep reflection. I invite you to reflect on your own journey. What have you learned? Who have you connected with? And how can you carry those lessons and relationships into the future? I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has walked alongside me, listened, and contributed to the Hello Frequency, A Lifestyle Podcast. This was my first year in this medium, and I must say, I’ve learned so much along the way. To think that I’m now a podcaster with 31 episodes—it still feels a bit surreal to say it out loud. You are a wonderful soul💖 Pwera usog: is a belief to counter bad elements/spirits, essentially a shield against bad intentions through hexes. Babies are often the targets of bad elements so it has become a norm to say that to infants. Tabi tabi po: meaning “excuse me” or “may I please pass?". You say this in the forest or natural area, incase that you accidentally step on a duwende (dwarf), engkanto (elemental) or any one of the many beings inhabiting the forest. It's the ultimate sign of respect for the natural and spiritual world. Lamang lupa: beings that inhabit the earth. Diwata: Nature spirits or faeries. Coming from the Sanskrit phrase "Devata" meaning “goddess.” Beng are a Mende ethnic group from the Ivory Coast, also known as Côte d'Ivoire. Jinn: According to Islam are any of a class of spirits lower than the angels. Capable of appearing in human and animal forms and influencing humankind for either good or evil. Lihi: While is a condition of pregnancy food craving. Lihí also encompasses a folk belief that whatever a woman craves during pregnancy will imprint characteristics on the child. Sadaqah: In Islam, these are voluntary acts of charity that showcase generosity, love and compassion guided by faith. Whether giving a hug, a compliment food, or donations. Sadaqah can be either small or big. There is no compulsion. Zakat: An obligatory act of charity. Mandated as one of the five pillars of Islam. Focuses on compassion as well as giving to the needy. It's like almsgiving, often collected by the Muslim Ummah (community). Kulam: While associated with black magic, it's also a form of hexing rather than cursing (sumpa). Connects to the ideas of retribution and justice through a Filipino spiritual lens. In an unjust society, Kulam can be used as a defence mechanism. Mystical creatures ( kapre, Tyanak, Aswang/ Managgal) serve a purpose in Filipino society to remind people of the importance of sticking together and looking out for one another and the importance of respecting, protecting, and maintaining a positive relationship with the environment.
