04 Worth More Alive Than Dead: BRAZIL's Jaguars with Lili Rampim
Manage episode 428241606 series 3579445
Featured in the TV series Planet Earth, Onçafari's conservation efforts are recognised around the world.
Despite being the third largest cat in the world, the jaguar is the least studied species among the big cats. Oncafari was set up to promote environmental conservation and contribute to socio-economic development through ecotourism and scientific research.
My guest Lili Rampim is also known as THE MOTHER OF THE JAGUARS. Lili is both Oncafari's lead field biologist and Caiman’s operations coordinator - her work lies at the intersection between Ecotourism, Reintroductions and Science.
What you'll learn in this episode:
- Lili's work with jaguars and how she successfully reintroduced 2 sisters back to the wild
- What the habituation process looks like with jaguars and why it's key for tourism
- Why some innovative conservation initiatives failed despite their best efforts
- The complex relationship between ecotourism, conservation and cowboy culture
Thanks to Oncafari's ongoing work to get wild jaguars habituated to safari vehicles in the Pantanal it has become the best place in Brazil to spot the feline. Once a Jaguar, or any type of wildlife is somewhat 'habituated' to the presence of human beings inside the safari vehicles they no longer see 'humans' as a threat and this facilitates Ecotourism.
Special thanks to Senderos who made this conversation will Lili Rampim @Oncafari possible.
