On this episode of Simple Health Radio, Dr. Emran discusses the importance of the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, better known as the lab test CMP.

The CMP lab test gives a physician a rapid and clear screenshot of what is happening in the human body.

Physicians typically ask patients to fast before getting their blood drawn for more accurate CMP results. Physicians often order a CMP for yearly routine physicals.

Your results will be listed in one column and a reference range in another. If results are within range, your results are considered normal and no further action is needed. If your results are too low, too high or not within the reference range, it can indicate several possibilities. There may be signs of hepatitis, kidney failure, diabetes, malnutrition, dehydration, or a medication side effect.

Others will order a CMP to help guide them in diagnosing a particular medical condition, illness or before undergoing surgery, such as an appendectomy or c-section.

A CMP can tell your doctor:

  • How well your kidneys and liver are working
  • Your blood sugar (glucose)
  • Your electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate and phosphate) and
  • How much protein is in your blood

Many lab companies such as Quest and LabCorp now allow secure apps so you can access your own data and share it with your family or doctors. If you had lab work recently, ask your doctor for a copy or save it to your phone.
