Little girl, Portland.
Tiny cherub face,
but tiger-cub, fierce
in sun: squinting
fake heart, sequined
on your shirt in
pink and red
catching the light.
I doubt your heart and mine
are much alike.

Hand grasped,
fixed stare,
red shirt, dark hair
ready for the next stop
step from the tram
off, and then where?
Portland!
Why am I here?
In memory your sun is always
so low and setting even
though it’s getting close
to the hottest time of the year,
here, though

it must rain,
a lot, but today
I get to see you
in the wedding-day
gold-white sun-shine, while
I go settle in the rhythmic
rattle rhyme of trams
turning corners. They do,
here in Portland.

But you, tiger-cub
have a universe that is
city-sized, Portland-shaped.
And I am a loose stub in this
plain cityscape. You’ll choose
to stay or choose to escape.
And maybe you will learn,
or you may already know
to take that rain with you
if you choose to go.
