ZACHARY'S NOTES:

Stanza 1 // The imagery present in John 12:24 is given poetic voice in this stanza. Through the mystery of death and life - things discarded by the world but given new life by God - we have “faith in our deepest darkness, and life in our night and death.”

Stanza 2 // The faith of which Jesus speaks and this hymn helps us sing is not only a picture, but a specific promise. Our death comes in the waters of baptism, where we are baptized into the glory of which Christ speaks in this weekend’s Gospel text. The result is not only a promise of praise and eternal life, but “heaven’s praise [begun] here” where Christ is “near us, deep in our night and death.”

Stanza 3 // This stanza tells us the natural result of the promise given - the dying one rises to bear much fruit! Today, that fruit is Christ himself, given to us as the “bread of life.” In Him, we rejoice with all the baptized - the “unceasing praise of the ages” - who have been raised from death to life.
