_podcastTemplateWelcome to Backstage Pass! Real Artists. Real Hip Hop. This is the show where we go behind the scenes with real hip hop artists and real hip hop. Every Thursday, we’ve got a brand new show of Backstage Pass! And today…

We’ve got DJ DMD on the hot seat!

This week, we’re going behind the scenes with DJ DMD. We’ll be talking to him about his music, his life, and why he does what he does!

All About DJ DMD

In 1996, DJ DMD released his first album, Eleven, independently. The album featured the now-deemed-classic release, “So Real”, which featured up and coming Houston hiphop artists, DJ Screw and his Screwed Up Click. In 1998, DMD and Inner Soul released, Twenty-Two: P.A.Worldwide, on the heels of the explosion of the album’s first single, “25 Lighters” which featured southern heavyweights Lil KeKe and the late Fat Pat and would become one of southern rap’s most known and sought after anthems. Twenty-Two went on to help Inner Soul garner national attention; which led to one of the largest indie-major deals of its time with the now-defunct Elektra Records.goodhands

Words from “25 Lighters” would ultimately find their way into the 2012 song, “I Gotsta Get Paid” by the legendary rock-n-roll Hall of Famers, ZZ Top. In 2001, he and Inner Soul released the critically-acclaimed, Thirty-Three: Live From Hiroshima (…Hiroshima was the name of the state-of-the-art studio Inner Soul built as a result of the success they were having at the time) .

The album contained another one of DMD’s revered and influential rap tunes, Mr.25/8. He would only release one more secular rap album, Forty-Four: 3rd Coast Classics Vol.1 (released independently in 2002), before making one of the hardest decisions he says he’s ever had to make: to leave his family, friends, and business because he felt his life was going in the wrong direction.

So in October of 2002, he moved to Dallas and shortly afterwards to Houston – where he was hired to help try to turn another local indie label into a success. That deal lasted four months due to the label folding; leaving DJ DMD without a deal, a studio, and any direction for his future.

Then in early 2003 things began to change. Dorie and his then ex-wife reconciled; and she and their kids moved to Houston to be with him so that they could begin again. After his spiritual awakening, DMD made the decision to not worry about his career in music but to focus on rebuilding his family’s faith in him and concentrate on “growing up.” He developed a passion for the Word of God; so much so that before he knew it 7 years had gone by. Then, while attending one of his church’s financial seminars, he says he heard “THAT Voice” again. This time It was telling him to reconsider doing music again. So, after taking time to pray, meditate, and wait on confirmation regarding “the assignment”, he took the leap of faith and on May 14, 2010, DJ DMD officially started e5 entertainment.

Since starting e5 entertainment, DMD says, “I’ve watched God take a revelation from 2Kings 4 and, piece by piece, provide for the necessary things and people needed to bring our first project to fruition. From musicians, to studio owners (…seeing I didn’t have or have access to one), to artists, to financial backers, I’ve seen God prove

His Word faithful time and time again. No wonder He’d inspire us to make our first release a song about His Word and Its life-changing power, #25BiblesOnMyDresser.” The single, which also features a new version of his deeply inspirational “Mr. 25/8??, is intended to introduce DJ DMD to the Christian Hip Hop genre, reacquaint him with the business he loved so much, and re-introduce himself to a fan base that continued to promote his secular works while he was learning to grow as a man.

As stated earlier, e5 entertainment’s mantra is to provide God glorifying music and “edutainment.” More music, videos, a mini-documentary, and mission work centered around ministering primarily to young people are all things you can expect in the near future. DJ DMD, with his new direction of wanting to positively impact people, is making it abundantly clear: he does not want to go down in history as…Mr. 25 Lighters.
